Press Announcements

Stealing Victory from the Jaws of Defeat Stolen from the Jaws of Victory

Tonight's Conference final win at Velvet Arena was brought to you by M.C. Escher.

After three periods of solid basketball, the Clams led Winter Haven by 13 and looked poised to head to their second straight League Championship. But the Velvets had other plans. The team put together a 29-18 run in the fourth period to pull them within 2. And when Smith missed a jumper with 18 seconds left and Bogaç pulled down the board, they called a timeout. Both teams strategized on the bench. And when they took the floor the Velvets struck quickly, evening the score on a Bogaç jumper with 12 seconds on the clock. The winded Clams dug deep and tried to execute their plan. They made the inbounds play and Smith advanced the ball, but Mezzetti was too exhausted to be effective and Choquet was double-teamed. So he dumped it to Christiansson to try and get a better look. But to no avail. Coaches and fans alike were planning for OT. As the clock wound down, Kok Wan put the pressure on, expecting the pass. But Christiansson, from way behind the line did the only thing he could as time expired. He launched for three. All eyes in the gym watched as the knuckleball floated towards the hoop. Mezzetti crossed himself, and the bench were on their feet. As the sound of the ball hitting the net echoed through the arena all was silent except for the small "away" section behind the Clams' bench. All 15 of them stormed the floor and lifted Christiansson on their shoulders as the home crowd threw down their beer cups and shuffled out of the arena.

The Clams will host the first game of the league finals vs. Illiniwek on Tuesday.

Also, congratulations to Massimiliano Mezzetti and Armand Choquet for coming in 3rd and 9th (respectively) in the League's MVP voting.
