Week in Review: Clams Peter Out in Prime Time

With the cameras rolling, the Clams gave up their first loss of the season to Beefcake’s Firestorm in a heartbreaker at the Beefdome on Thursday night. After the Clams shed first blood on an Álvarez dunk, they went neck and neck with the home team for most of the first quarter. But, helped by a pair of threes from Moroka, the Storm went on a 15-6 streak and by the beginning of the second period the Clams were down 19-28. But Christiansson got on fire, hitting 5-in-a-row, and the Clams rode his hot hand to a 51-42 lead at the half. A string of threes by McCabe, Luke and Moroka put the teams in a dead heat again. But with 8 minutes left in the third, Álvarez was injured by McCabe while taking a shot. Stratzalis replaced him at center, and then the Storm went on a 11-0 run. As the teams headed into the final period, the Clams were down five. Il Mollusco played superhuman ball for most of the fourth, with 3 assists, 4 buckets, 5 free throws, a block, a steal and 2 rebounds. And it looked like the Clams were going to pull it off when Wisutratsami sunk a jumper to put the Clams up by 4 with 2 minutes left. But two missed shots from Christiansson and a turnover from Hui provided the Storm all the opportunity they needed to go 8-0 in the last 2 minutes, and steal victory from the Clams with the game's 7th lead change.

Coach Simon was furious in his post-game interview. “I want Chris McCabe to apologize personally to Guillermo! This was an intentional attack, a hit! And I want the league to take disciplinary action against both McCabe and Coach Jack! Head hunting is not just a problem in the NFL, it’s a problem in Buzzerbeater, too!” Buzzerbeater officials declined to comment.

Also declining comment after the game was Italo "Il Mollusco" Campioni. He was, however, found Friday morning passed out on the sidewalk in front of Dundee's famous Drunken Clam bar. And photos of him as he stumbled into training showed an unpublishable message from an angry fan written in sharpie on his face.

The team also racked up a second PL win, an unexpected scrimmage victory against a good Spanish team, and beat the Raleigh Warriors for their eleventh regular season win.
