Racers Dominate, Move To Final 256

DIAPER DOME - The clock struck midnight for Cinderella.

Big Boy Team, a Division V team who crushed a Division III and a Division IV team on their way to Round 4 of the national tournament, were dominated by the Racers 110-94.

"Our boys gave a great performance tonight. I was really worried about this game," said Jerry Midwest. And worried he should have been; despite being in a lower division, Big Boy Team was ranked 697th among American teams, compared to the Racers' 823rd.

Big Boy Team's run-and-gun offense had put up piles of points and not lost a game all season, but the Racers' 3-2 zone defense was up to the task. Omaha led 63-29 at the half, holding stud point guard Don Trotter (7925258) to 10 points, and every other Big Boy starter to one basket or fewer. Vinko Vajs (12693356), who averages 19 points per game in league play, missed his first 14 shots. By the time he hit one -- to a sarcastic serenade from the home crowd -- the game was decided.

This year's tournament run matches the Racers' best run ever, their inaugural run three seasons ago, which also ended in the Round of 256. Once again, their Round 5 opponent is a Division III team, in this case Ruination (23677), on the road.
