I'm Goin' Down, Down, Down, Down

OMAHA - The Racers fought valiantly in their first ever relegation playoff home game, but fell to Saratoga Snakes 94-83, ensuring their return to Division IV.

"We're disappointed to be going back to Division IV after it took us nine seasons to move up," said Jerry Midwest. "But we learned a lot from this season, we think we've got a great team, and we plan to be back up sooner rather than later."

The Snakes, who crushed the Racers in a regular-season meeting and the relegation series opener, led most of the way. An 18-6 run cut the Snakes' lead to 86-83 late. Pass-first point guard Ramon Miner had a chance to tie the game with a three-point attempt, but his shot was off. Saratoga responded with an easy bucket by Jozef Jachym, then made their free throws late to hold on.

The Racers brought out an unconvential lineup, with fan favorite Bob Booth starting at power forward, top player Abel Daniels coming off the bench, Benjamin Desmons sliding over from shooting guard to small forward, and backup Demetrius Good starting at the two. The switches were partially necessitated by an injury to starting small forward Gines Pita Canos.

This plan backfired when Desmons and Booth each picked up two fouls early, Good failed to live up to his name, and the Racers stifled the Snakes' inside game only to be beaten by their outside shooters. Point guard Francisco "The Evil" Flaquer led the Snakes with 30 points, a career best, helped by an 11-for-11 night from the free throw line.

Booth led the Racers with 30, but the home team was done in by its failure to get any points from the backcourt. Desmons managed 13 playing out of position; Miner had 8; Garfield Steen, a little-used backup pressed into action by the Canos injury, had 4; Demetrius Good, despite playing all 48 minutes, had only 2.

If the Racers can keep high-salary acquisitions Desmons and Bernard Kawski, and can add quality prospect with the #3 pick in the draft, they should be a dominant team in Division IV.
