Last-Second Foul Saves Racers

OMAHA - The Racers escaped what would have been a devastating loss to last-place Fastbeats (29578), 104-102, on a last-second foul by Pierre Dumas (10022441).

With the score tied 102-102 and less than a second left on the clock, Dumas fouled Kenny Switzer (9797855) as he heaved up a desperate long-range jump shot. Switzer, who was only in the game because Hidacio Charino (9797857) was injured, sank two free throws to clinch the win. It was Switzer's only two points of the game.

Even more amazingly, the foul happened only two seconds after Fastbeats had a chance to win the game on the other end of the court. After a Bob Booth miss with 22 seconds to go, Fastbeats collected the rebound and held for the last shot in what was then a tie game. Leonard Granger (10022456) had an open hook shot in the lane, but missed it.

Booth collected the rebound, threw it into the front court to Switzer (who had apparently sprinted all that distance), and Switzer heaved up a long two-point shot in hopes of averting overtime. The shot wasn't even close, but Dumas' plowing into Switzer sent the latter to the free throw line, where he broke the tie.

"Damndest ending I've ever seen," said Jerry Midwest. "And I went to the South Florida-Providence game a couple weeks ago."

Pierre Dumas is no relation to Claude Dumas (11770147), the former Racers prospect who butted heads with Jerry Midwest over his hairstyle.
