Ever since the update of the country and world rankings, I've been curious as to how accurate they are and what weight they give things like winning the national tournament. That lead me to looking through the top leagues in England and finding out who the top 25 are by ranking. There's a heavier weight in the rankings for more recent accomplishments, and it seems as though titles are worth much more over finishing 2nd. Added is some random info about key results, and where they rank today. EBBL is how many seasons experience coaching in the top league (including this season).

1. SwindonBulls EBBL:5 EBBL Title, 2 NT Titles (Currently: EBBL Big 8, 2nd) **In NT SF currently**
2. Da Bombs EBBL:6 2 EBBL Titles, 1NT finals (EBBL Big 8, 1st) **In NT SF currently**
3. Faster Pussycats EBBL:5 2x EBBL SF, 2 NT Titles (EBBL Great 8, 1st) **In NT SF currently**
4. Hackney Marshes EBBL:6 1 EBBL Title, 2x NT QF (EBBL Great 8, 3rd)
5. Fat River Leechers EBBL:2 NT Finals (EBBL Big 8, 4th)
6. Alperton BC EBBL:3 NT SF (EBBL Great 8, 5th)
7. Los Mikitos EBBL:3 NT Finals (EBBL Big 8, 5th)
8. RTM Stars EBBL:5 2x NT SF (EBBL Great 8, 6th)
9. bc ergelis EBBL:3 (EBBL Big 8, 6th)
10. Spartak MSK EBBL:1 NT Finals, 2NT SF (EBBL Great 8, 7th)
11. Can't Dunk fo Toffee EBBL:1 NT QF (EBBL Great 8, 2nd)
12. Talon Tomahawks EBBL:7 EBBL SF, NT SF (EBBL Big 8, 7h)
13. Bolo Towers EBBL:3 (II.2 Great 8, 1st)
14. Gauson EBBL:0 3x NT QF (II.1 Big8, 2nd)
15. Tatatallfella EBBL:3 NT QF (EBBL Big 8, 3rd)
16. Vitamin Power EBBL:7 EBBL Finals NT Title (EBBL Great 8, 6th)
17. London Sonics EBBL:1 (EBBL Great 8, 4th)
18. Wigston Werewolves EBBL:5 NT QF (EBBL Big 8, 8th)
19. Conclave Custers EBBL:0 2x NT SF (II.3 Big 8, 1st)
20. freakstream EBBL:0 (II.2 Great 8, 2nd)
21. Pinoy Ballers Inc EBBL:0 (II.1 Big 8, 3rd) **In NT SF currently**
22. Moomins EBBL:0 (II.1 Big 8, 1st)
23. Northern Allstars EBBL:2 NT SF (II.3 Big 8, 3rd)
24. Granton Giants EBBL:0 (II.3 Great 8, 1st)
25. The Jaxxs EBBL:0 NT QF (II.4 Great 8, 1st)

Overall, I'd say that I agree with the rankings, recognizing several of the teams are very close. What are your thoughts?

Nice work dabomby! I like how it shows a brief history of the team's records in the EBBL and the national cup.

Pretty interesting that 3 out of 4 of the teams still in the national cup this year are the 3 highest ranked in the country, should give quite a competitive end to the competition!

Just one small niggle though dabomby - Gauson are in II.1 not II.2

Ask the coach of the Fat Lever leeches, ranked 5th, whether he'd fancy beating my lot, ranked 15th, in a best of 7?
While the rankings are pretty good, finishing 5th last season and missing the playoffs saw my lot drop from 8th and top 800 in the world, to 15th and top 1300, whereabouts we've been ever since. So I don't take them too seriously.

The ratings seem to be quite heavily weighted towards the national cup. Both you and me got knocked out in the 2nd round this year which probably explains why we're probably a bit lower than where we should be.

You're absolutely right, Gauson is now showing properly in II.1.

@ all: Overall yes I do agree that the rankings aren't perfect, and may not even help much in determining who on a given night is the stronger team. Looking back over the last several seasons though, I can't disagree strongly that someones performance has them set way out of place.

That's pretty interesting. I have to say that when you put the ranking in a list like that a number of obvious misrankings pop up like elmacca pointed out.

The first four are quite accurate :) Only I stand zero chance to win against he first two in the long run. Also I don't fancy my chances against the Mashers...

sorry. someone has to be critical :P

I think the list is not very realistic, without pointing towards certain teams, because I dont want to hurt anyones feelings, there are quite a few teams higher than I am ranked that I would like to play against every night off the week, even at their arena. Our div II.1 is by far the hardest off all div.II leagues and partly due to this, I have been knocked out off the NT 2 seasons in a row very early. Being 23rd or whatever I am in the country standings, is about 10 places I would reckon off the real strength off my team. I might have looked wrong, but retto fives team doesnt make it in the top 25 at all, like some other teams do make it, that I am sure he has beaten too.

I think we can all conclude that recent seasons and especially NT runs count heaviest toward the country ranking standings...

I'd agree with much of what you say there. The rankings aren't really a declaration of the actual strength of each team. They're indicative of how these teams have placed at seasons end when it's all tallied up though.

Obviously playing in the EBBL will put someone ahead of most teams in division II. And I think rightly so. That doesn't mean that some DII teams can't beat many of the teams in the EBBL on a given day, but rather the EBBL teams are recognized for playing every game against a higher level of competition on average.

Taking your team as an example, Astragoth. I'd say you've got a stronger club than several of the people ahead of you, but you haven't actually finished ahead of them in the National Tournament (1 QF appearance) or league standings (1 trip to DII finals). I can't say I'm suprised about the rankings anywhere so much as it's made me confirm or re-think my thoughts on some of the teams in the list.

I haven't looked through the rest of the teams yet, but with Faster Pussycats tournament win they have earned the ranking of #2 in England! So again, congratulations to elboss!

Updated rankings! Instead of keeping track of what titles each team has won I'm going to just list the number of what I'll call "Major Titles". Those would be an EBBL or National Tournament championship.

7 - 7 Los Mikitos (EBBL Big 8, 5th)
8 - 12 Talon Tomahawks (EBBL Big 8, 3rd)
