It looks like I may not understand the soft cap very well. I was surprised to see that these two players were so close to their potential caps. Is this tool fairly accurate?

I was hoping to take Turk here up to triple proficient (IS, ID, REB) but it says he will be at 100% before I get to that point.

I was actually hoping that this guy would be my starting point guard eventually. He has a little more wiggle room (higher potential) but it looks like both these guys will hit 100% with salaries lower than the max guesstimates in the newbie thread.

I did pretty well in the draft last season; I managed to get all 3 of the top players on my board.(Although I missed out on this guy (35967978), think I had him listed 4th but he was gone by the second overall pick ) I've been juggling 6 training slots between 7 players all season so if these two are nearly done its no big deal the newer guys all have better potential anyway and are almost ready to get minutes in meaningful games without hurting the team too much. I try to get full training for five of the seven and still be competitive each week.

Anyways... soft cap on training... tied to salary or tied to skill points?

Both, but for newbies salaries is easier to understand. The info you've read could be outdated too since salaries have dropped over the last few seasons (a player with the same skills has lower salary now than he had 5 seasons ago).

I was pretty stunned to see they might already be soft-capped.

Any idea what the soft cap penalty is? 50%? 90%?

Turk is done after tonight unless someone gets injured, but Valbo will probably continue to get about 30 minutes/week of traininig in the 6th slot after the other 5 get their full 48+.

From a competetive and development standpoint, I don't really feel the need to invest a lot into that sixth training slot since it gets shorted on minutes so often. I'll be wasting the potential of anyone I use in that spot.

Here a very rough estimate on Cap as it pertains to Salary. Its what i use. Yes with the salaries going down over the last few season this isn't 100% accurate any more but i've found that it gives a VERY close estimate. Also note that if you pull up the transfer market there isn't a player i found with a salary anywhere near the Caps listed here for Hall of Fame or All-time Great. I actually would go as far to say if you revised this estimate the caps have gone DOWN because overall salaries are down. But do some research on the transfer market and let me know if you see a player with Star Potential who's salary is greater than 40-50k or a Starter making more than 30k. You wont i think
