Press Announcements

Setback...

...As we know, Japan failed to qualify for the 2nd round of the Asia cup.

Although this is regrettable, there have been several highlights.

Guards:

Yasuyoshi Honda has established himself as the real deal. With a guard rotation of Him, Ueda, Fujii, and Kawagichi, Japan looks to be in good shape for our next run at the Asia cup.

Small Forward:
In a transition year, it appear the age of Oishi and Ochi are nearly up, it appears that the new younguns Tsunami and Asano are poised to take over control of this spot.

Bigs:
Yasujiro has be a standout at the premiere defensive big in Japan. His work guarding the best bigs buzzerbeater has to offer has not gone unnoticed. And young Matsumoto has shown true grit as the scoring big successor to Furuzawa who is on his last NT Legs.

Although the dispointment of not getting to the 2nd round still stings, we must remember that our missing the 2nd round for all intents and purposes boils down to a last second buzzerbeater loss to Malyasia.

So if this leads to calls for my head, ill take the heat. But the progress the team has made in giving game experience to a new generation of 27 and unders will no doubt pay dividends in the future.

I think you did your best and nobody can ask for more.
Rather than ask for your head in the loss, I think a reassessment of how things have been done is in order. There is a consolation tourney next season, I have hope you can make a good showing there, maybe our best consolation tourney in a few seasons. I had hopes this season we would do better in qualifications...but the ball has already bounced on that...

I disagree wtih your assessment of the guards. I do not feel that we have an NT calibur guard core. A lot of emphasis has been put on salary in recent discussions...surely this applied to our guards as well? I believe that to be strong as an NT we need MVP+ level guards, capped at/near the MVP level with good secondaires to be successful. Honda may be the bright spot, and well on his way...but I really hope we have some other MVP+ guys with good OD/PA and shooting (plus some IS,ID etc.) in the works. I really think our lack of depth and key primaries at the guard spots hurt us.
