Lyndon dela Pena again showed why he is the premier point guard of the Philippines as he put on a show in the first quarter of the 128 to 96 drubbing of Kazakhstan by Team Pilipinas last night. Lyndon dela Pena already had 11 points 5 assists and 3 rebounds by the end of the 1st quarter and ended up with 21 points (9-12 shooting) 12 assists 4 rebounds and 1 steal. His pinpoint passing was too much for the Kazakhs to handle as the game was over early. Johnas Dispo had 20 points 6 rebounds while Marlon Benedicto had 16 points, 12 rebounds 2 assists and 1 steal to his name to help seal the game early.

"Lyndon dela Pena had officially been named captain of this seasons NT squad." Lolo Smithz announced during the post game interniew. "The way he has been playing the past few games is really amazing. Really befitting Lyndon dela Pena who was tipped on an early age as a PG prodigy and was in the NT team already in this early 20's. At 29 he is at his prime and raring to take on the best of the best worldwide. He needs to be at his best as many PG's are raring and lurking in the wings ready to take over the starting PG spot from him."

"I expected a better game from Kazakhstan. They were 3-0 but was really surprised early on they couldn't keep up with us. Next game is against Singapore then after the final game in the first round against the dreaded many times Asian Champs China."

It's raining! Ulan na naman!

Singapore had a good start and was leading the Philippines in the early goings of the 1st quarter but by the end of the 1st Philippines had a 8 point lead abd by the end of the 2nd half it ballooned to 23. Singapore tried to rally in the 2nd half cutting the lead by 16 at the end of the 3rd and actually came as close as 10 points but Team Pilipinas didn't wither and held on to win the game by 17 points to a score of 121 to 104.

Pilipinas had 6 players in double figures. Ulan "The Rainman" Cantara when he wasn't sitting on the bench with foul trouble (25 minutes played only)was shooting 5 out of 8 threes ending up with 25 points 5 assists 1 rebound for the night. Johnas Dispo and Lyndon dela Pena scored 22 and 20 points respectively to help the Pilipinas cause while Marlon Benedicto added 15 points and 11 rebounds.

"To be honest the game would have been much closer if two of the top guards of the Singapore team wasn't injured." Lolo Smithz said after the game. "Our players were in a fouling spree tonight giving the Singaporeans a lot of free throws 27 of 35 attempts made. Ulan Cantara was great this game after being out of the lineup for the past few games due to game shape issues."

"Next game is against the dreaded Great Wall of China. Looking at their wins against our opponents it will be a struggle to win but anything is possible as the ball is round they say in basketball. Clash of the no loss teams of our bracket. Heaven help us :P "

No Miracles

The matchup everyone was waiting for finally arrived and as predicted China was simply too good for Team Pilipinas as they won 116-104 in last nights closing games for the first round of the Asian Cup Championships. Poor offensive flow was so evident on the Pilipinas side as Lyndon "The Captain" dela Pena wasn't around as he was down with a severe injury. Johnas Dispo had his best scoring game so far this season with 24 points but still wasn't enough to pull down a win. Marlon Benedicto added 19 points and 17 rebounds also to the losing cause.

"No excuses tonight China simply was the better team. Losing dela Pena to an injury was a big factor as his replacement Chandler Mosquera wasn't up to the task of distributing the ball sadly. China had 26 assists to our 14 but we outrebounded them 56 to 48." Lolo Smithz said during the post game interview. "Everyone starts at zero on the next round so every game must count if we are to reach the semis and the finals. I hope we won't have any more injuries to our key players."

When asked what were the chances of Team Pilipinas winning it all Lolo Smithz has this to say. "I'm a realist so I would say chances would be less than 50 percent. Currently it looks like Hong Kong, Taiwan and China are the team to beat and in the 2nd round if I'm not mistaken we are going to be lumped with Hong Kong and Taiwan making our group the group of death. China should have an easier path to the semis and the finals. Do miracles still happen? I really hope they still do."
