Decided to go ahead and sign up.
No great trainees. A couple starter potential 18 year olds and 21 year old star/all-star guys. Will still train them if i ever buy a trainer. For now it's stamina and free throws.

For overall strategy, not really worried about being great. When they first announced this as a second team in another country I was planning on having a team in Senegal, so I'm thinking I might do sort of a themed team and only buy players from Senegal or just from Africa. Then have a team of Africans + home grown draft picks.
Just something silly to play with.

I'm going to buy players that aren't overpriced and see how well I do. Does that count as competing?
I have to admit that you're right, skeleton tanking sounds like a great plan. But I just finished doing that on my real team

I need someone with more time than me to verify where a team would need to finish to promote in Utopia. So there will be 16 D3 Leagues with 16 teams each (there would be 16 D3's, right?) for 256 teams. 79 D4 Leagues that will each have one autoqualifier for the winner. That leaves 177 other teams to promote. So roughly another 2.25 teams per league. I'm guessing it will be done like bot cleanup and the best records would promote.

Would it be more profitable to promote and go skeleton crew in D3?

Quite possibly. Also factor in that everyone is going to start with 0 draft points, so if you save them up at 2 per week, you'll have 54 to spend on that draft.

If you do just enough to promote, you will most likely have a mediocre D 3 roster anyway (by USA standards) because very few teams will have enough money to invest in an actual D 3 quality roster. And, those that have quality players are most likely older players and will drop skills quickly.

I think the best way to go is to try and hold your own until just before the allstar break and then look for bargains on the TL and try to do enough to promote. From there, it may or may not make sense to tank D 3 or to try and push ahead to D 2.

I personally look for economic advantages before I run for a title. So here are my thoughts on prospects:

1) Win title in Div 4. Those that do will carry the best economic advantage into Div 3. Three reasons: 1) extra playoff games. 2) better ticket sales in Div III. 3) Further advance in Cup. Essentially this format is a race to the top.
2) Advance via bot. Economically viable because this season has abnormally high amount TV contract. If I would have known this I would have attempted for #1. But as such I already went for a tanker setup.
3) (My strategy) Tank in Div 4. Build arena and hopefully land a good prospect with the first pick in the draft. Add to roster after season is over and attempt to go 22-0 the next season. Two position train and sell off some prospects for cash.
4) Miss the bot promotion, but make playoffs with a cheap roster earning enough cash to win a title next season.
5) Spend too much on roster additions, miss bot promotion, not get a good draft pick, etc. Which will be a majority of the teams IMO.

My about $50k scrub rotation won their 2nd league game by 50 points with less effort. And now beat a cup team with a $30k center by 49 points!

But watch me get knocked out of the cup next week by a team with no player over $5k...

Well I just played on the road & TIE'd vs. CT. My scrubs still won by 26!
Was thinking it was a TIE vs. TIE game & got worried for a little while.

Hopefully I'll set some kind of record for failed CTs against.
2 in a single week already...

Why couldn't I end up in a league like yours?

The 3rd place team in my Utopia league+conference has: a $50k center, $30k PG, $26k PF, another $10k G +$1 million in transactions already. Yay. So I probably won't even make it *to* the finals, despite being undefeated still. And having been ranked #13 in all of Utopia.

You know... The only thing I wanted out of Utopia was real games with scrubs vs. scrubs. At least for the first season or so. Instead I wound up in this unfun dbag of a league, where teams had big-time players in like week 2 already.

Anyway, I could probably afford a playoff roster of: 2 $50k centers, 2 $20k guards, & a $10k SF. + Solid backups at each position. Should I go for it?

Or just settle for 1st place + a playoff loss? Would first place + 2 losses be enough to promote? But, even if it is... it just sucks to see that team get a trophy. At least if it was one of the other teams winning....

Off topic... my cheerleaders have a new routine. I'll upload it somewhere when I get a chance. It Hruddey L'ward material, that's all I can say for now.

I think two losses would be able to promote with first place. It's sort of a crap shoot. The real incentive not to go for "auto" promote is you miss out on the season ticket holders (or at least I think that is the case?).

My league does have a chinese day trader with +1M in transfers that could purchase a championship if he wanted.
Two guys that made DEEP tournament runs and are fielding way more salary than me. And hrudey...who looks cute in pink.

I'm seriously considering selling off my entire roster at the playoff deadline if I can make it with one loss to the end of the season.

I'm also considering upping merchandising by selling "I love DPs!" and "DPs make me scream!" T-shirts.
