Pilipinas wins against Vietnam in season opener, beaten up by China the following week

We opened our campaign in this season's Asia Championship in Japan against Vietnam. We had a 12-pt lead after the first half with Vietnam putting in more effort. We managed to end the game with a 17-pt lead being led by Leorio Lovino (22pts, 8asts) and Jiffrey Sumalapao (29pts, 5rebs, 5asts). Off the bench, it was Raymund Duraliza who carried the offensive load putting up 21pts, 3rebs, 1ast & 1stl in 13 minutes of play. Delfin Orais also had himself a 19/15 double-double.

For this week's game, we faced world #7 China. The first quarter was close but easily got out of hand in the 2nd quarter and 4th quarter. They beat us by 29pts. The team was led by Leorio Lovino with 25pts and 3asts. Jiffrey Sumalapao chipped in 16pts, 4asts and 2stls shooting 9 of 10 from the FT line.

Next week, we will be facing a 3-0 Australia team. We hope to see a good GS week against these guys as they are a tough team to match.

Laban Pilipinas!

Pilipinas beats Australia with more effort, routed Macau by 50

The last 2 weeks were pretty good for us as we won our games against Australia (by 9) and Macau (by 50).

Against Australia, the team was led by our starting trio of Jiffrey Sumalapao, 38pts, 7rebs, 6asts on 15-29 shooting from the field, Leorio Lovino, 29pts, 4rebs, 9asts on 11-19 shooting from the field, and Jacinto Estorninos, 24pts, 4rebs, 2asts.

Against Macau, 5 players scored in double figures with 3 starters putting up at least 20pts. Sumalapao had 30pts, 4rebs, 2asts, while Lovino posted 20pts, 3rebs, 6asts. Melvin Chan also made contributions of 20pts, 8rebs and 5asts. Off the bench, the team was led by Raymund Duraliza who filled out the stat sheet with 13pts, 3rebs, 3asts, 1stl, 1blk while Melecio Sidad put up 13pts, 4rebs, 3asts in 15 minutes of play. Pete Libron had a game-high 18rebs, 7 of which were offensive boards.

In our last 2 1st group stage games, we will be facing the two teams chasing 4th place Vietnam, Malaysia (tomorrow) and New Zealand (next week). We will try to ensure wins over these teams for us to end this group phase in a high note.

It is the all star week kaya naman I hope everyone tries to keep our NT players in great shape. Only 2 games this week for most teams kaya sana ay maalagaan natin ang minutes nila. For those with 3 games this week, please make sure to still manage minutes kahit na 2 cup games pa ang laro natin.

Maraming salamat sa lahat ng patuloy na sumusuporta sa ating national team.

Laban Pilipinas!

Pilipinas beaten by Malaysia, 106-100, on more effort. The following week, we proceed to the next round after beating New Zealand, 114-105

Team Pilipinas was beaten by Malaysia with more effort last week. The team was led by Leorio Lovino 30pts, 3asts, 2rebs but we trailed all night against the more focused Malays. Melvin Chan chipped in with 15pts, 5rebs & 7asts while Sixto Nical added 10pts off the bench on 13 minutes of play.

This week, we managed to fend off the gnarly New Zealand who gave their all as kicked out of the competition. They were 4th place before the game but the 9pt defeat against us and the 15pt win by Malaysia against Macau sealed Malaysia's 4th place finish. The team was led by the trio of Jiffrey Sumalapao (27pts, 3rebs, 6asts), Leorio Lovino (23pts, 3rebs, 6asts) and Sixto Nical (23pts, 5rebs, 2asts). The bigman tandem of Fortunato Arcega and Pete Libron combined for 16pts, 27rebs, 10asts, 2stls and 11blks. Off the bench, the team was led by Raymund Duraliza with 10pts and 2stls in 11 minutes of play.

On Monday, the next group stage will start. Our games in the next 5 weeks to round out the Final Four are as follows:
vs Hong Kong
vs Nippon (Host)
vs Iran
vs UAE
vs Australia

We need to win at least 4 games to ensure our chance of making it to the semis. Currently, we have 3 available NT slots remaining. We plan on calling up other players if we need to so make sure to keep your players in great shape.

Muli, maraming salamat sa lahat ng patuloy na sumusuporta at nagtitiwala.

Laban Pilipinas!

Round 2 opener against Hong Kong was a 30pt beatdown, 80-100

The team trailed throughout the game and was visibly outclassed by the mighty Hong Kong squad. The team struggled to shoot the ball with only 3 guys able to score in double figures. Led by Sumalapao with 14pts, Lovino with 14pts, 4asts, 3rebs and Marquese with 10pts & 8rebs.

Team Pilipinas got through a nailbiter against the host, Nippon, 85-79

All starters were able to score in double figures led by Sumalapao with 21pts, 3rebs & 4asts. Orais had himself a 15/17 double double. Libron also contributed 13pts, 8rebs & 2asts.

Pilipinas on another thriller but failed to win against Iran, 86-89

Team Pilipinas led 84-77 with 2:30 minutes remaining in the final quarter. However, we only managed to score 2 points in the remaining period and missed our last 2 chances to take the close the gap. The team was led by Delfin Orais with a 20/22 double double. The rest of the starters were also able to score in double figures but have struggled to score the ball.

Our last two games with be against UAE and Australia. After today's defeat, our chances don't look so good, so we'll need to win big in both games. Titingnan natin.

Maraming salamat sa lahat ng patuloy na nagtitiwala at sumusuporta.

Laban Pilipinas!

Pilipinas beat UAE comfortably, 144-110

After a slow start, the team managed to overcome UAE and beat them by 34pts. 1 error in GDP may have contributed to the slow start. The team was led by the captain Leorio Lovino with 40pts & 4asts after shooting 5 of 6 from beyond the arc. 6 players scored in double figures with Jiffrey Sumalapao chipping in 23pts, 10asts and 5rebs. Melvin Chan almost had a triple-double with 20pts, 11rebs and 9asts. Off the bench, the trio of Melecio Sidad, Raymund Duraliza and Delfin Orais combined for 43pts, 15rebs, 6asts, 3stls and 3blks. Honorable mention to Pete Libron who added 4pts, 22rebs and 4asts.

Pilipinas crunched Australia in a last gasp effort, 98-86

In a last ditch effort, team Pilipinas needed to beat Australia by at least 40pts. However, even with more effort put up, we were only able to outscore them by 12pts thanks to a comeback that started in the middle of the 3rd quarter. The team was led by Jiffrey Sumalapao with 30pts, 6rebs, 5asts. Raymund Duraliza also put up 27pts, 3rebs and 2asts. Leorio Lovino had a quiet but still put up 12pts, 6rebs, 8asts, 2stls and 1blk. Pete Libron had himself a double-double, 10pts, 11rebs, 5asts and 3blks.

Although we won our last two games, finishing with a 3-2 record, the loss against Iran proved to be pivotal as they were able to keep the 3rd place in the group with a point differential of +25 against our +19. Australia also ended up with a 3-2 record but they kept a +75 point differential to secure them the 2nd spot to the semis.

With our season over, I will proceed to start scouting for possible future call up. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank fedco paper for trying to keep Jacinto Estorninos in great shape throughout his tenure in the National Team (NT). He played his last NT game against Iran 2 weeks ago and will end his NT stint with 90 total caps.

Maraming salamat sa lahat nang patuloy na sumusuporta sa NT at kitakits next season sa Consolation Tournament.

Pilipinas in the Consolation Tournament

Next week, we will start our consolation tournament. We are currently ranked 33 and are hoping to improve that this season. Our 8 games are set as follows:
A vs Misr (Rank 71)
H vs Tounes (Rank 52)
A vs Jamaica (Rank 92)
H vs Scotland (Rank 68)
A vs Romania (Rank 40)
H vs Slovenija (Rank 24)
A vs Iran (Rank 34)
H vs Panama (Rank 80)

We will be focusing on playing our younger guys to provide them the experience necessary for the future. We will still field some of our older guys para naman competitive pa rin tayo.

Maraming salamat at laban Pilipinas!
