Panthers win against Taiwan, 50-0

It took a troupe of wallabies to dash Taiwan’s hopes of advancing to the U21 Finals.

The Taiwanese team bus was allegedly attacked by a troupe of wallabies, 5kms away from the venue. It is unclear what caused the small, kangaroo-like animals to attack the bus.

“Wallabies, by nature, are cuddly, and readily accept the presence of humans. What’s strange is I have never seen as many as 80 wallabies go wild over a bus,” a representative from Bush Australia said, on the condition of anonymity, due to the sensitivity of the ongoing investigation.

Team Pilipinas will now face an old nemesis in the finals: Hong Kong. The Panthers are snake-bitten against 9th seed Hong Kong, who took advantage of a noticeably weaker Chinese squad in the semi-finals. “We will do everything we can against Hong Kong, and get the championship this seas,” Coach Jeorge said in a text message.

Cubs beat Argentina, 101-91

The Pilipinas Cubs could not convert from behind the arc, but managed to secure the win against Argentina, 101-91, at the Eden Arena, in downtown Prague.

Rhyan Mislos led the Pilipinas charge, finishing the game with 22 points, including 10-12 from the free throw line. “At first, I thought this game would be close. Good thing we were able to jump out of the gate with a 9 point lead at the end of the first quarter,” coach Jeorge said during the post-game conference.

The Cubs left everything on the court to secure the win. “While I am happy to get out first win, it does not help that we have to face top seeded Italy in our next game,” coach Jeorge said, when asked to comment on the team strategy next week.

Cooking clubs and social media influencers are trying to throw off the Italians, in preparation for their game against the Cubs. Several TikTok videos were sent to the Italian contingent, showing diced pineapples being used as garnish in pizza, and placing ice in prepared espresso drinks.

Cubs lose to Italy, 105-87

Beating the number one seed in the tournament proved to be a tall order for the Pilipinas Cubs, losing to Italy, 105-87 in Prague.

“You cannot win if you convert less than 40% of your shots, while your opponent gets to convert more than 50% of their shots. I am surprised we weren’t beaten that badly, if you consider everything,” coach Jorge said after the game. The Cubs finished the game with a measly 38% clip from the field, including a miserable 1 of 16 from behind the arc. “Clearly, our team needs to practice on their shooting. You cannot win at this level if you finish the game with 6% shooting from the three-point line.”

Because of the loss, the Cubs are now barred from using their mobile phones in the practice facility. “We cannot afford any distractions. Aside from our shooting, we also have to play good defense. Anyone who does not show the effort will be sent home,” a team official said.

The Cubs are ranked fourth in the World Championship standings, and must win against 6th seed Poland to stand a chance in advancing to the next round.

Cubs lose to Poland, 124-119

The Pilipinas Cubs lost to the Polish U21 squad, 124-119.

Team Pilipinas almost pulled the improbable: Coming back from a 17-point deficit entering the fourth quarter, before running out of time. “We have to give our boys credit, we scored 46 points in the final 12 minutes… If only we didn’t have to do that though, but that’s how the game is,” coach Jeorge said after the game. The Cubs improved their shooting from the three-point line in this game, converting 15 shots of 33 attempts.

The loss to Poland puts the Cubs in a tight situation: Argentina and The Philippines have the same win-loss record, but the Cubs are ranked lower because of the point differential. Both teams will face 1 higher seeded team (Argentina vs Italy, and The Philippines vs Spain) and South Africa. A Cubs loss to Spain, coupled with an Argentina upset against Italy, means the U21 team will be sent home. Also, the Cubs need to have a larger winning margin than Argentina, when facing South Africa. “Basically, not only should we match Argentina’s win-loss record, but we must make sure we get a net point differential of at least 10 points, for us to advance in the next round,” the team spokesperson said, when asked to comment on the matter.
