Tough's strategy seems to be to keep a low salary throughout the season and then load up ahead of the playoffs. What really concerns me about that is that their "low" salary is still higher than most teams...

Curious to see what Mediocrity and Plasma do this offseason, whether they add some stars or bank the money for pre-playoffs, or even wait to make a big push next season

i was wondering the same thing, but i was confused by the player's ages. in my simple universe, a player under 32 has to have serious issues to leave the roster, once added. trying to bring in occasional fresh talent while maintaining the core over several seasons -- isn't this the way it's done?

and if you do need a late season boost, i mean, you want big bruisers to end the year with, salary and age be damned, that's a route, and it's cheaper, too, by a longshot. (i just did a search for players under $500,000, >140 TSP, and got 9 players.) that's what made sense to me.

so when tough starts selling off very good, and very young players, that's crazy . . .but then i realized why tough is the champ and i'm not:

if you have the money, shelling out $3 million for a 27 year old is actually a pretty safe investment, for that player's value in one season will still be comfortably in that range when he is 28. a nice rental and at the end of the season, that pile of cash is replenished. true, you have to cover the salary, but playoff money and at least half-a-season of sell outs should help alleviate that cost.

i'm getting the feeling i am a small-market team (no stars, no merchandising, small margins) and this is what it is like to compete with a large-market team (NT players, merchandising, great infrastructure, deep pockets). and this cycle of buy, win, sell, and then buy again works, this could be a long run.

man, i hope i missed something and i'm wrong . . .

I think your analysis is spot on. If you have that much money, you get access to elite players who maintain resale value really well.

The past season made me very aware of the gap between teams like Mountain Eagles, Bananahorns and Wasted Potential, and teams like ERG and Mill City Thunder. The former group has 4M+ in the bank to buy elite players and enough merch/ticket sales to support $1M salary rosters for sustained periods of time. The latter is typically running 700-800K salaries and trying to incrementally build their team over multiple seasons. The latter strategy works well when you are constrained by your budget, but typically reduces the ceiling of potential for your team.

It'll be interesting to see if anyone else tries to join that first group this season (Splash?). You typically need to have a ton of savings when you make it to NBBA, I wonder if any of the promoters are prepared to make a statement this season.

lol -- another way to put the same point, i am much more worried about my floor than my ceiling. Eighth place is the crypt; Fifth, Sixth and Seventh place can lead to that same place. "Fourth is Fine" is my team motto.

to be clear, all the great teams in this league started in the same spot as i did, so what's that tell you?

btw, welcome to all of our newbies! Don't let our talk scare you! Up here, any team can win on any night! Seriously, they can.

Thanks for the Welcome, 1st time in the NBBA some of you guys already know of me. You beat me to get here lol. Although, I have been in BuzzerBeater for many seasons I still have a lot to learn. I am just hoping I can win a game or two here.

I enjoy drafting my players at 18/19 yr/old and training them as a core and build around them. I hope that strategy can work well here. GL to All

Also before plasma does the really boring, formula power rankings (idk where he got the inspiration). Here are my totally subjective, biased power rankings I came up with just now after 1 game for this season.

1. Mountain Eagles - Well he just won the league and now has a lot of money to make some moves from the top of the mountain, so it seems like he'll be in control of the top of the league if he wants.
2. Bananahorns - Retaining the roster that took 2nd place (with a player injured), though game 1 did not look too impressive from Bananahorns. Bananas might be getting a little too ripe as a few players are getting older.
3. Splash Gang - Game 1 was a loss with less effort on the road, but Splash Gang has been running a successful low salary team for a while. A couple of young players look like they might be becoming more dangerous this season and might finally splash in some more 3's.
4. Forza Jazz - NT PG Gibson Aboki is leading the way on this team, however rumors are he is looking for a buyout to go to a real contender. The loss tonight came on the road on less effort.
5. 10inch Vertical - Taking the defending conference champions to overtime on the road in game 1 is a nice way to join the league. This teams biggest problem is that they lose every opening tipoff due to their low vertical jump.
6. The Musicians - 3rd highest salary in the league and an impressive game 1 win! Will we be listening to their song all season?
7. F.Day Internet Lovers Club - First day wasn't great for F.Day as they lost with more effort at home on TV. This will be all over the internet, though their new player was in 5 GS.
8. Wasted Potential - Honestly I have no idea what I'm doing this season, potentially something great but it might go wasted.
9. Eugene Register-Guard 2.0 - This may be the season that they take the #1 spot in total wins, if they do I'm sure we will hear all about it in their daily newspaper.
10. Skinny Dudes - Impressive game 1 win after surviviing relegation, this team might look scary if they didn't all weigh 120 lbs.
11. The LA Lions - Honestly, they should be much higher but I forgot to put them on here until now, so 11th place it is for them. Hopefully this won't cause too much of an upROAR among the Lions.
12. Mill City Thunder - Thunder comes after lightning so a win will come after the loss tonight, right?
13. Sofuegg - Couldn't think of a pun with their team name since I don't understand it so rank #13 for them even after winning by 28!
14. Hipster Bears - Winning game 1 is a little too mainstream for these bears, but we'll see what upgrades they might make to their roster.
15. CC Mavs - As long as they aquire a new PG that will show up to play in their basketball games then they should be looking good.
16. [Insert Name] - Game 1 was a brutal loss as this team continues to go through a marketing nightmare as they can't come up with a team name. However, their manager was not available for comment as he was not able to be found.

Pretty sure these are 100% accurate and the season doesn't need to be played, but I guess we all need something to look forward to on Tuesday nights.

i've often wondered about buying great players in their post-34 years old career. i've seen some extraordinary TSPs, well above anything on my squad, going for relative peanuts, in part because of their large salaries. but, i've wondered, why not buy a 35 year old SG with 140 TSP who shoots like Curry? Next season, he's down to 130 -- still well over 100 at 40, plus experience? is it possible the market is wildly underestimating the value of these guys? why not do this?

'cause we all know that that strategy is crazy -- except for our boy SaulTNuts, he of overtime fame with Bananahorns. i'm next, and by golly if i'm not facing a starting five of $200,000 players not-so-long-ago -- now i see how Coach Shnuffy could have had some problems.

So, to reach some conclusions:
We have
-- teams with millions in the bank, on the lookout for NT players they can add after week 7 or so
-- teams that live from paycheck-to-paycheck
-- and now a team that is as cheap as the latter but can compete with the former

How fun!
