I've been "essential" for about a year straight now, even before the covid calamity was upon us. 50-70 hour weeks without end requiring peak physical effort and mental acuity. I'm probably not nearly as old as I let on, but it feels like it more and more each day.
we live in surreal times. i am a field manager for a regional chain of discount mattress stores, we got a "essential" waiver and we have so far been rolling. so i am busting my ass 6 days a week and in many cases for a few hours on the 7th. but we have as a chain been blessed with a windfall of extra business. (btw deronimo my old friend, we have a store in Fredericksburg VA about 45 minutes from you, why don't you and the wife mosey down and treat yourself to a new set, just tell them Lambini sent you ;) ) this season however has led me to abandon the BB2NIGHT segment my other old league mate mavs does such a great job of for yall, though i still offer a betteer "soundtrack".
but in the midst of all this my little rag tag hodgepodge collection of (to steal a line from Bobby Heenan) "has beens and never will be's" has turned s49 so far into a affair to remember. i think it has been spurred by good old slaughterhouse five being a dumping ground as a good percentage of teams are pulling a Exxon valdez and those in contention have just let the rosters ride. i was undefeated until last weekend before fading in the final moments on the rosd at mouthbreathers and taking a 12 pt L. but a win saturday on the road Saturday night against a opponent in the relegation zone secures HCA throughout. but its too late to add pieces,, breathers added some oomph to their roater though integrating a piece this late in the campaign i can say from experience is a dicey proposition.
the changes i have tried have been of the front office variety as I have changed out "suits" more than Dunder Mifflin with rather perplexing results on the court and at the box office. a few weeks back i added a world renowned sports psychologist in hopes of maintaining good GS and we did, but i also hoped it would lead to a better focused on court product which it really did not, sure we kept winning but wardo could have won against most of the schlubs we were paired against and just something seemed lacking in the execution. after the collapse Saturday night i put a cap in that guy on the bus ride home, i think we dumped him out at some truck stop in Tiera del Fuego. Then again all this asshat did was play the signature song of Joe Esposito on a loop while imploring the guys to "paint the fence" and "wax on, wax off" and well my over the hill gangs response was to just mix another round of rock and rye and binge watch "the midnight gospel" .
so the executive council (ok me) decided what we needed was to add some oomph via a Superior PR man with crowd appeal as we decided to yack up the ticket prices in a effort to seperaye the sheeple from some of their stimulus. Well in the words of Jim Cornette that went over like a plate full of piss as the last home game drew a paltry 7100 and change with like a 62% fill rate after most home dates were drawing 10k+ with a couple of them filling the cozy 11,541 confines to near capacity. Also i have been getting hammered in the survey when the flaky fans have been polled on if i am improving the team as a couple of times i garnered a subpar 1 1/2 in that criteria.
still a win saturday means the championship road travels thru the gate City. 21-1 MIGHT get it done for a at large if we fall short of the brass ring. of course if I do pull a George and Weezy and move on up to that deluxe apartment in the sky i will do so with no bankroll and a roster that to be charitable is nominal. but i do know where i want to be if i do, question is how many of my old pals from the past will be here to greet me?
