Iran's outstanding defense hold off Singapore 86-79

Iran U21 gameplan were very simple : Let Singapore shoot from outside the box. The strategy worked 99%.

Confused completely by Iran's defense, Singapore trailed 14-26 on first quarter. Although managed to better their offense on 2nd quarter, Iran's shot were falling, and able to preserve the lead 52-40 into halftime. Singapore did bounce back on 3rd, scored 18-8 run to cut the lead to six. The Merlions hold it on from there and gave their fight until near end of final quarter, where Iran's defense has once again made them hung their head and gave up at 79-86.

What Iran did to damage Singapore team weren't simply "let them shoot". Instead, Iran bigman has done plenty of "fake trap" to Li Jin Yew and Yip Su Yeng, forced the immediate outlet pass out of double team. And Iran's wingmen (Mostly Ferdosi & Khoravani) detected that move, and simply hover closely to Singapore shooters to force them taking contested shot. At the end of game, Singapore have missed all of their Jump Shot but two from outside of boxed area.

Perhaps the lowest point for Singapore U21 now. They are once again outduelled, outclassed, even with their key player healthy and even has put much more effort than Iran. Players have tried their best. With LJW scored 27 pts and YSY had 21 pts and 19 rebs. Fan Ping Wai, Tan Wei Shi and Long Mingfa combined for 14 assists and zero turnovers. And Iran's elegant defense has made FPW shot 1/11 FG and Mohd Syamsuri Ahmad 2/20 FG.

Kambozia Ashoubi led Iran with 24 pts and 10 rebs.

With 0-3 on 2nd round, Singapore will try to win the last two games, against Nippon and Malaysia U21.

Yip Su Yeng buzzerbeater shot brought Singapore a narrow win over Japan.

Much more looked lost, and less enthusiastic, Singapore almost suffer their fourth.

Down 67-71 in a minute to go, Mohd Syamsuri Ahmad just came alive. After a offesive rebound tip in, he then swished two freethrow to tie the game at 71-71. Next Japan possession, he forced a quick turnover from Fumiko Okamaya to set up the final possesion for Singapore. As two Japanese played doubled Syamsuri, he quickly flipped the ball to Yip Su Yeng and Yip converted the tough under ring shot as the buzzer horned. Syamsuri raised his palm to the air, and gave the team Captain a chest bump. Whole team congratulate Yip for the shot.

Syamsuri Ahmad led Singapore with 20pts and 7rebs, followed by Yip 15pts but only shot 5/15 FG. Other than the clutch fourth quarter, the earlier quarters were a disaster. Less ball movement, no execution. Li Jin Yew didn't make those shots that he usually made, and finished only 4/13 FG and 15 rebounds.

Singapore will be back to face their rival Malaysia U21 on the last Tournament match next week.

Malaysia got the best of Singapore, won 87-73 to close the Tournament.

With captain on the bench, team Malaysia didn't waste the chance.

Ekram brothers scored 25 and 20pts respectively, overpowered smaller lineup of Singapore at 4th quarter to to solidfy their victory 87-73.

Trailed 10 pts after intermission, Singapore buckled up defense and managed to tie up 55-55 after 3rd quarter, but Malaysian big lineup were too much for them.

Pretty much aware Malaysia will use 2/3, Singapore decided to go with smaller lineup with Deng Jin Yau and Syamsuri Ahmad on the frontline that designed for isolation towards two slowfooted opponent bigmen. However, Ahmad had mediocre game, and Deng bricked his jumpshot at most at 4th quarter, and was subject to mismatch against bigger Ekram bin Saad.

Li Jin Yew led Singapore with 16pts and 16rebs. Ahmad scored 14, Deng and Fan Pingwai scored 12.

With their latest result, Singapore finished tournament with 1 win and 5 losses. And will be focusing again for next season Tournament.
