I end up firing my current PR guy.. I got a lower rated PR guy since in the lower divisions, I don't need one that good. The plan is to then wait until the right salary levels vs. purchase price to get a new trainer.

If your cost-benefit analysis works for you, that's great.

I have not used better than Advanced trainers, and I have never bid more than $30K to win one. Generally I'm getting a guy with salary between 11,500 and 12,500. I keep them until they get to around 16,500. At that point, saving another 4-5K per week ends up being worth spending about 40K in bidding and severance. After about 8 weeks, it's savings for another season or so.

Unless I were trying train at the NT level, I can't imagine it would be worth the extra investment on a trainer for me. I'm not even sure I can justify my costs of scouting and training as it is. Sometimes I think it's a losing game entirely. I can easily spend 300K on scouting alone and not be able to recoup that from selling the draftee, and calculating the eventual Merch benefit from keeping my guy is beyond my ability at this point.

I guess that is the difference. I am currently training U21/NT worthy players so it should pay off for me. I also don't do scouting since I am not going to be in the bottom 4 of my league and won't have good picks. I generally just save a pool of scouting points for those times when I do need to scout. Other than that, I don't scout. Allows me an extra 20k per week

As written before me, You are not missing anything and considerations are accurate. Once given a trainer salary and a candidate salary you can easily (well, maybe not that easily but definitely do-able) calculate how much money one should spend on this candidate.the problem is that not all the players in the game are doing those calculations and so they propose some over bids on staff members. you just need to be patient and wait for your opportunity to come. i use staff members from levels 2-4 and can surley say that there are good opportunities in those levels.
