Round 8

Home Axis vs. Western Titans 104 - 92

This was the most anticipated match of the South season so far. It wasn't close to what it promised with Axis controlling the game for a majority, never letting the Titans get close.

3 votes - Home Axis - Irinel Stancu - 28 points 15 rebounds 6 blocks

Stancu keeps rolling shooting 63% and with him scoring 20 of his points in the first half, he was really a major part of the Axis lead that they were able to keep till the final buzzer. 6 blocks caps off a great night.

2 votes - Home Axis - Ignacio Sánchez - 20 points 28 rebounds

Sanchez didnt have the biggest impact on the first half, however when the Titans surged in the 2nd half he was huge on the boards and put in some vital points.

1 vote - Western Titans - Huo Hengquan - 29 points

The tiny chinese shooting guard was big in the for 13 points in the 3rd quarter when the Titans clawed their way back into the game. He shot 6-9 from 3pt range to round out this scoring performance.

Maggots vs. Brisbane Thunder 69 - 88

Maggots looked promising early however couldn't weather the thunder's storm and were overrun after the 1st.

3 votes - Brisbane Thunder - Cristiano Semoni - 32 points 21 rebounds

Semoni shot an impressive 14-17 and dominated his opponent allowing him to score a dismal 2 points in 41 minutes.

2 votes - Brisbane Thunder - He Anfu - 19 points 14 rebounds 4 blocks 4 assists

Anfu shot 7-10 during an efficient also adding 5-5 from the line. On route to his 14 rebounds he was hard on the box-out keeping his opponent to single digits on that front. This just shows how big of a discrepancy the rebounds were between the two sides.

1 vote - Maggots - Christian Brakenhoff - 18 points 7-11 FG

Brak was again the best imo for the Maggots. He was their most efficient scoring player and only played 22 minutes. Consistent again.

Match of the Round

Shepparton shooters vs. Bainsynators plebs 82 - 84

An intriguing match, with the Plebs going out hard and causing all sorts of trouble for the shooters. With both teams playing heavily on the inside, it was expected that the normal culprits, Viojan, Suelves and Terroso would be in control of the game. However Plebs point guard Igor Zahkarov dominated the scoring early with 10 points for his team in the first 6 minutes. Despite Viojan failing to have an impact on the board, he had the defense guessing with the 'Terrorist' picking up 3 fouls in the first quarter. At 27 - 39 in with 5 minutes to go in the 2nd, the game look to change with Terroso picking up his 6th foul, exiting the floor with 12 points and 2 blocks, with perfect shooting from the field and 5-6 at the line. Had Terroso been able to keep his hands to himself the Plebs may have been able to hold their substantial lead. At the half Plebs maintained a 37 - 45 lead with Zahkarov leading all-comers with 18 points. Viojan also exhibiting a nice half of basketball with a 12 point and 10 rebound double double.

After the half the Shooters came out with the momentum cutting the lead to 4 halfway through the third. Although without Terroso the Plebs managed to regroup behind Zahkarov's 26 points at the end of the third to stall the Shooters comeback going into the last 61 - 67 up. 6 minutes left, it looked over and an easy Plebs 'W' leading by 9. But it was not over there... 1.09 on the clock Plebs still lead 76 - 82. But JOURNET hits a huge 3 to bring the Shooters within Striking distance with 40 seconds left. 5 missed free throws out of 6 in the final minute for Igor are about the only blemish on his night, which could have so dearly cost his side with Aragon draining another huge 3. But it was not to be for the Shooters as Viojan missed the tieing fadeaway jumper inside the key. A great close affair and here are the votes.

3 votes - Bainsynators Plebs - Igor Zahkarov - 30 points 3 steals 3 assists

The obvious most valuable player on the court despite feeling the pressure at the line, due to his lack of experience. Shooting 12-25 he lead his team to victory. Not to mention keeping his opponent out of it for large portions of the game.

2 votes - Shepparton Shooters - Junel Viojan - 22 points 19 rebounds 5 assists

He fouled out dangerman Terroso on route to his 10-21 shooting for 22 points. He looked dangerous on the boards and had a hand in some of his teammates baskets. Did the most for the Shooters despite missing the tieing shot.

1 vote - Shepparton Shooters - Máximo Sáenz Aragón - 19 points

Aragon may not have dazzled the stats sheet however held his opposing shooting guard De Filippo to a pitiful 2-16 shooting night. Shooting 50% also helps of course.

Geelong Vipers vs. Mangoloids 72 - 87

Mangos were the solid favourite in their matchup with the Vipers. Vipers were in it early only trailing 17 - 23 at the end of the first, being lead by Ace 'Disco' Dispo with 7 points and 3 rebounds in 9 minutes. Makarios Gkonias was a leech to the Vipers cause with 4 turnovers in the first quarter while Wazza Tickle at the other end found his rythm for a quick 9 points in the quarter. In the second the Mangos began to take the venom out of the Vipers going on a 4 - 14 run to begin the 2nd. Led again by Tickle who piled on another 6 points in that run. At the half the Mangoloids had put considerable daylight between the sides leading 28 - 48. Thanks to Tickle's impressive first half, finishing it with 20 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists.

He wasn't finished there though. In a complete rout Tickle added an amazing further 13 points, 2 rebounds and 2 assists in the 3rd, to stretch the lead to 23 points. The emphasis had left the game at this stage with Viper bigs Dispo and Cartier doing all they could to stem the mango juices flow, combining for 31 of the Vipers 48 points. Tickle saw alot of pine in the 4th only adding another three-ball to his incredible performance. The Mangoloids inside isolation tactic certainly opened the perimeter up for Tickle, unfortunately for the Vipers they zoned too heavily inside with the 2-3 defensive zone and were caught napping way too much outside for them to ever be in the hunt.

3 votes - Mangoloids - Wazza Tickle - 36 points 9 rebounds 5 assists

All those stats above are amazing but when you combine it with only playing 37 minutes and shooting 6-7 from beyond the arc, possibly the best performance of the South conference so far.

2 votes - Geelong Vipers - François Cartier - 27 points 22 rebounds

Cartier played the whole game, which might explain the high stat range he found himself in. However contributed importantly to the Viper's first half toils and continued to fight hard till the end. Especially with his ability to draw fouls getting there for 9-12 free throws.

1 vote - Mangoloids - Jasper Bains - 11 points 6 assists

The U21 star was handy on the defensive end keeping his opponent to 2-9, while also throwing some nice passes on his way to 6 assists and a crisp night.

Possum Chasers vs. Amos rogues 102 - 78

It was impossible to guess what this game was to bring, mainly because it is hard to know whether the Rogues would have a team worthwhile of facing the Possum's. Early on it was clear that the Rogues had brought a team that would show some fight, even though there were only 6 of them they hung on the tails of the Possum's trailing 25 - 24 at the first break. Luca Cieckan for the possum's and Ciprian Vãtafu for the rouges led their teams with 12 points a piece at the break. In the 2nd quarter the possum's pulled away only marginally again taking an 8 point lead into the rooms 55 - 47. This quarter saw Cieckan take a passenger seat and Fu Yueli and Ivanildo Ribas piling in 10 points a piece, while Possum Powerhouse Trinh Trinh was having a low key night at the half. Vãtafu continued his work in the second increasing his total to a game high 17 points.

A 13-6 run in the first 6 minutes of the second half put the ascendancy on the possums shoulders. Yueli, Cieckan and Ribas all had a big hand in this run that really blew this game away from the rogues. The massive 25-10 3rd quarter had the Possums routing the Rogues by 23 points, without a great deal of contribution from TT. The last quarter involved a bit of a tussle but didnt make any difference to the result. Yueli added a further 8 points to cap of a 27 point, 11 assist night for the Possum point guard.

3 votes - Possum Chasers - Fu Yueli - 27 points 11 assists 6 rebounds 4 steals

You wont see many better point guard performances than this in a conference dominated by big-men. Fu had a hand in everything in this game dishing out 11 b-e-a-utiful dimes to his much appreciating teammates, he also incredibly scored dialled in for 27 points aswell. He was a menace on the defensive end taking the ball away 4 times and keeping his opponent resigned to scoring only from the line.

2 votes - Possum Chasers - Ivanildo Ribas - 18 points 7 assists 4 rebounds

Fu's wingman tonight his match resembles the younger brother of Fu's match. But giving away 7 assists and adding 18 points is a mighty fine performance for a small forward in only 32 minutes. Shooting 57% and 0 turnovers, he was not wasting the ball and deserves the 2 votes.

1 vote - Possum Chasers - Luca Cieckan - 17 points 9 rebounds

Luca only played 32 minutes and scored less and rebounded less than his opponent did in 48 minutes, but one thing he didnt do was he didnt commit a turnover all night. Combine that is 8-11 shooting and you have the definition of efficiency ladies and gentleman

Whompas Donkeys vs. Eggplantpopolopolous 71 - 90

Whompas Donkeys have surprised many with their performance in the South season so far. But they got jumped early by the Eggplant's when the took a 16 - 26 lead behind some nice first quarter play by Kornelijus Stonevicius with 7 points and 8 rebounds. But some solid 2nd quarter play by Jordi Monroig pull the Donkeys to level at 34 - 34 with 5 minutes left in the second. In those 5 minutes Eggplant's stemmed the flow to lead 40 - 46 at the half. The Eggplant's were really functioning well as a team, with solid all-round scoring, Oriol Sagrera with 11, Stonevicius with 9, Allessandro Bertasi with 8 and Nicola Pisanu with 7. Nicola also had a half high 7 assists, 3 more than the Donkeys as a team. Monroig was the leading scorer at the half with 13, however he had scored more than double what any of his teammates had contributed.

Eggplants pulled away again in the 3rd taking a 14 point lead into the last. The well-oiled Eggplant machine continued its even contributions with Pisanu improving to 15 points and 8 assists, while three other Eggplant players contributed double figure points. The Donkeys slowed as Monroig struggled to find points in that quarter only adding 4 of the Donkeys 14 points. Eggplants extended the margin to 19 in the final quarter. Pisanu and Stonevicius had good nights leaving the game with 20 points a piece.

3 votes - Eggplantpopolopolous - Kornelijus Stonevicius - 20 points 18 rebounds 3 blocks

Stonevicius was efficient from the floor shooting 8-13. He also hit the boards hard with 18 rebounds, of which 10 were offensive. His defensive work on Monroig was challenged, however his offensive hustle in only 35 minutes accounts for the possibility of 20 more points, gets the 3 votes

2 votes - Eggplantpopolopolous - Nicola Pisanu - 20 points 12 assists

'Pissonyou' had an outstanding night dropping 20 while also finding time on the ball to pass out 12 assists for an additional 24 points. He also cooled down the red hot Dewey Bowers, making the Donkey shoot like a Mule for 3-17.

1 vote - Whompas Donkeys - Jordi Monroig - 21 points 14 rebounds

Jordi was the only fighter for the Donkeys, he managed to work his way to the line for 9 attempts where he was perfect. 14 rebounds capped of a good night for Jordi, despite being unable to stop Stonevicius.

Round 9

Possum Chasers vs. Maggots 106 - 67

Not really a pretty affair with Maggots pulling INEPT ratings for all but perimeter defense where they managed to pull a mediocre rating. The Possum's took only 6 minutes to pour in their first 19 points, racing away to a 13 point lead. Trinh and Cacho lead the charge with 9 and 6 points respectively. TT looking to make amends for his absence from the votes in the previous game was brutalising the Maggots bigs. It went further pear-shaped for the Maggots when their main man Christian Brakenhoff who suffered an injury by a Niccolo Galletta shooting foul and Brak's basline jumper. Brak was leading his team in scoring when going down, although it was only with 4 points which is pretty embarrassing for his teammates. Nevertheless the Possum's went into the 1st break leading 31 - 18. TT had 8-9 shooting for a quickfire 17 points, could he hit 50? A good second quarter saw the Maggots close the gap by 2 with an 49 - 38 scoreline. The comeback was lead by Maggots center Jakub Podhradsky with 12 points at half-time. TT slowed drastically on the point scoring only making a singular baskets, deciding to focus on grabbing some rebounds, collecting 14 in the first half.

Another massive 13 point quarter win saw the Possum's routing the Maggots by 24 with one to go. With TT only scoring 4 points since the first was running out of time to add to that, having accumulated 5 personal fouls. Cacho and Yeuli were well equipped to carry the team should TT foul out, both already having double doubles. Podhradsky lead the Maggots with 16 points going into the last. TT managing to play a clean quarter was on the court to see out the 39 point drubbing. Adding 10 points in the last, he had a big night.

3 votes - Possum Chasers - Trinh Trinh - 31 points 22 rebounds 3 blocks

He dominated 2 of the 4 quarters scoring as he wished in the first and the last. Shooting 14-22, along with 22 rebounds and 3 assists he had control of this game. A good return for the rising star.

2 votes - Possum Chasers - Fu Yeuli - 16 points 14 assists 3 steals

Fu backed up last weeks great performance with another classy performance, handing out a massive 14 baskets while canning 6 from 13 for himself. Maybe the guards are becoming a better show in this conference.

1 vote - Possum Chasers - Simeón Cacho - 17 points 14 rebounds

Cacho always seems to be outdone by his teammates, however another nice game with 8-13 shooting and a double double grabs another vote here.

Western Titans vs. Bainsynators plebs 89 - 66

Bit of a mismatch in this game with the top div 2 Titans taking on the mid div 3 Plebs. However The Plebs ran with the Titans in the 1st only trailing 21-19 at the quarter time break. All-round performances by both teams in the first quarter with no player really taking the game into their hands. The Titans broke the game out to 10 points halfway through the second with solid performances by their guards who rallied and added a majority of the points in the second. Maintaining the 10 point lead going into the locker rooms at the half with a scoreline of 43-33. Huo Hengquan with 15 points and Juho Alakärppä with 10 led the international charge for the Titans over the Plebs guards. Igor Zahkarov led the plebs with 9 points while Xavier Suelves chimed in with 8 points and 7 rebounds.

Titans continued to pull away in the 3rd taking a 65-50 lead into the last. Hengquan continued to contribute, however the third was controlled by an MVP contender Uditi Samdup with 13 points and 8 rebounds. Plebs were hanging around thanks to Zahkarov and Suelves. Titans iced an easy win in the 4th taking the quarter by 8. Hengquan finished with 19 points, while on the other side Suelves finished with a game high 22 points and 17 rebounds.

3 votes - Western Titans - Huo Hengquan - 19 points 3 steals

Huo may not have piled the stats on like some other players in this match, however he is getting the 3 votes because he scored a majority of his points when the game was in question in the first half, with 50% shooting from 3pt land and the field. He also held his opponent to 3-14 shooting along with picking his opponents pocket on 3 occasions.

2 votes - Bainsynators Plebs - Xavier Suelves - 22 points 17 rebounds

Suelves was facing a classy opponent in Samdup and out-scored him and out-rebounded him in similar minutes. 7 of those rebounds were offensive at that aswell. The most valuable player for the Plebs.

1 votes - Western Titans - Juho Alakärppä - 14 points 4 assists

The Finn was very valuable to the Titans in this game as he was intrumental in leading his team the the first half lead when the match was up for grabs. Juho shot over 50% and dished out 4 dimes in a handy game.

Match of the Round

Home Axis vs. Mangoloids 92 - 85

The formidable Axis side were to face another challenge in some delightful fruits. Halfway through the first things were fairly even with Axis leading 10 - 9. A nice 0 - 9 spurt for the Mangoloids saw them go into quarter tie with a narrow 2 point lead. There was no dominating performances to make not of in the first quarter, just some very entertaining ball. Mango's extended the lead to 6 leading 27 - 33 midway through the second. It appears that Axis has all the luck with Mango's young gun Luke McCaskie hitting the floor hard on an Ignacio Sanchez foul. In the absence of McCaskie, their opponents Home Axis pulled their way back into the lead holding a 42-41 lead at halftime. Leading the Axis lineup was Paco Garrido who in the second quarter raced away to 15 points and a couple of steals. Mango's on the other hand had an incredibly even scoring half with players scoring 8,6,6,6,6,5,4 for their points.

Coming out after the half with a man down the Mango's found it hard going stopping Garrido and Sanchez. Axis clawing away to an 8 point lead with 6 minutes to go in the 3rd. Axis also finished off the quarter strong winning it by 12 and taking a 74 - 61 lead into the last over the bruised Mango's. Sanchez led the Axis charge with 23 points and 14 rebounds with a quarter to go. Garrido was travelling along nicely with 21 points, while Eder Arbizu was trying to keep his team in touch with 17. A solid first 3 minutes for Mango's had them within 6 points behind a couple of baskets from Arbizu. A further 3 minutes and the lead was 80 - 77 after a Jasper Bains 3 pointer. Mango's could get no closer than 3 points and let this one slip away.

3 votes - Home Axis - Ignacio Sánchez - 27 points 20 rebounds

Sanchez had a great game, especially his 3rd quarter of 14 points and 4 rebounds. The 3rd was where the game was blown apart, and it was Sanchez that lit that 3rd quarter up.

2 votes - Mangoloids - Eder Arbizu - 23 points 11 rebounds

Eder did a great job on MVP leader Irinel Stancu allowing him to score only 10 points which is a long way his usual standards. Eder also did some great offensive work scoring a team high 23 points of 11-23 shooting
