I could take you to a few places that'd make you change your mind!

I will say, though, the best meal I've ever had - The Getty Centre in Los Angeles. It's a near orgasm just thinking about that meal again.

My girlfriend and I basically plan our holidays around food :P

When we talk about food, are you just talking specifically about fine dine and reputable restaurants? I'd just follow this guide, (http://www.agfg.com.au/guide/awards/). Sydney is still leading and followed closely by Melbourne.

I assume Sydney and Melbourne are much more multi cultured than other Australian cities. So there's no doubt have better cultured food.

my gf and I do the same and our recent trip to Melbourne we dined at some of Melbourne's finest and I have to admit it exceeded the dining we have here in Sydney. I haven't been to SA in a while, but wouldn't be surprised if it rated better than Sydney dining! hahah.
Sydney's dining has gone down recently, the once well renowned restaurants haven't improved and only gone backwards.

no it's just an opinion, I'm not Sydney bashing because I am from here and have always talked it up in the past, but now after experiencing something Melb. I honestly do think that Syd. hasn't kept up with the times and Melb. is now the premier city in AUS.
I was really surprised and shocked at how much better Melb. was compared to Sydney and if you had experienced what I had you would see where I'm coming from hahah.
The grass isn't always greener, I'd prefer Sydney over Brissie anyday of the week! hahah. Sorry, I'm not hating against the QLDers I just prefer Sydney more :P

When I am on holiday and enjoying myself in other cities. Everything seems to be better aswell, I don't know if it's actually better or my judgement is influenced by my mental state.

All of those publications, awards and the like, are always very focused on the eastern states. But, have a look at what some food critics have said - I recall the big guy from Masterchef saying a year or two back that despite its size, the cuisine in Adelaide is the best in the country. And he eats a fair bit of food, so I imagine he'd know...

And as to the multi-cultural aspect - Adelaide has had large Italian, Greek and German populations for quite a while, and our Asian food is as good as you'll get anywhere. In fact, I believe that we have the only chef in Australia that is permitted to serve fugu (pufferfish), working at Kenji on Hutt Street (awesome, awesome Japanese restaurant).

People bag this city, but if you have someone who knows the good spots, it's really a great place to hang out and eat amazing food, drink good wine and have fun with friends. If you want to go to raves and clubs, then yeah, it's probably not your thing. Our casino is pretty rubbish too, unfortunately, but c'est la vie :P
