Round 7

Geelong Vipers vs. Western Titans 53 - 98

The Titans were never in doubt in this game. They won all quarters pretty comprehensively against the hapless Vipers who managed only 8 assists to the titans 30. Vipers shooting a pitiful 22% and a wildly mediocre 2-32 from 3pt land. While the titans were completely opposite, being efficient in all aspects of the game.

3 votes - Western Titans - Uditi Samdup - 18 points 15 rebs

Efficient 18 points, Efficient 15 rebounds, Efficient 8-9 shooting and a little bit sloppy with 4 turnovers. It was a very clean performance from the big guy also playing tight defense on Cartier keeping him to 5-18.

2 votes - Western Titans - Konstantine Shavgulidze - 17 points 4 assists 3 steals

Shavvy wasn't as efficient as some of his teammates on the offensive end, only shooting 8-16... but hey 50% is efficient enough if you ask me. His defensive work is what impressed me, keeping his opposing player to 2-14. He set the example for the rest of his teammates leading to the complete shutdown of the vipers attack. Great work.

1 vote - Western Titans - Juho Alakärppä - 11 points 6 assists

The Finn finishes off the votes with a few nice dimes to go along with his 5-7 shooting. His defensive work, limiting his opponent to 1-8 sets himself apart from the other players on the court.

Possum Chasers vs. Bainsynators plebs 96 - 82

Looked tighter early, but the fouling out of Pleb's Center Suelves in only 17 minutes the Possums took the ascendency in the 2nd quarter. Too add insult to the Plebs TT took it upon himself to then foul out the Plebs backup C in a further 28 minutes. without a designated center the Possum were able to keep the Plebs out of the contest.

3 votes - Possum Chasers - Carl Halliday - 32 points

Carl was the gamebreaker in the first half and the most valuable player when the game was in dispute early. With 15-26 for his 32 points. He also kept 'snotman' to a mediocre shooting night of 5-21.

2 votes - Possum Chasers - Trinh Trinh - 28 points 16 rebounds

TT was a menace for the defense playing a role in fouling out both his opponents in 45 minutes, of course with help from his teammates but it is no mean feat, and just shows how much of a problem he was to the defense on route to his 28 points.

1 vote - Bainsynators Plebs - Paolo De Filippo - 17 points

The Italian usually disappears when the going gets tough, so i was good to see him hang around when some of his teammates were struggling to contain their composure and fouling out. Shooting 58% and limiting his opponent to 22% he was about the only Pleb to beat his opponent.

Match of the round

Whompas Donkeys vs. Mangoloids 94 - 91

This one was an overtime cracker... tightly fought, the Donkeys looked to have it in the bag until a 4th quarter rally saw the mango trio, Tickle, McCaskie and Bains wipe the deficit in only 4 minutes of play. The donkeys stayed with it just to have the regulation win snatched away with 0.4 left. Mangoloids had the momentum but the Donkeys were stubborn as mules to hold on for the close win.

3 votes - Whompas Donkeys - Ignacio Santana - 24 points 16 rebounds 4 assists 3 steals 3 blocks

A very solid statline explains Santana's night. Showing he is just as good with the orange as he is with a guitar. He went head to head with Arbizu and despite shooting less efficiently went to the line and shot 8-11 compared to Arbizu's zero trips to the line.

2 votes - Mangoloids - Eder Arbizu - 22 points 11 rebounds 3 blocks

Eder lost the head to head battle after also fouling out near the end. Many of those fouls sent Santana to the line which may have lost them the game, but they wouldnt have been there without his 11-13 shooting

1 votes - Whompas Donkeys - Feliks Cichoński - 11 points 5 rebounds 8 assists

In his limited 29 minutes of gametime he post some very nice stats, with the Donkeys being 18 points better than the Mango's while he was on the court.

Brisbane Thunder vs. Eggplantpopolopolous 83 - 103

Eggplants got the win as expected, but didnt have it all there own way for the first 3 quarters. but a nice 30-19 final quarter made the scoreline look much worse that it was.

3 votes - Eggplantpopolopolous - Nicola Pisanu - 37 points 7-9 3pt

Nicola took the 'piss' out of the thunder doing what he wanted from downtown. He also dished out 5 assists. He had a good scoring and it was an exhibition from Nicola in the end.

2 votes - Brisbane Thunder - Cristiano Semoni - 30 points 15 rebounds 3 blocks

The newly acquired PF import was by far the best Thunder player and has by the look of it to find himself in many more votes to come. Shooting an impressive 14-24 he was the only thunder player to shoot better than 50% on the night.

1 vote - Eggplantpopolopolous - Kornelijus Stonevicius - 13 points 15 rebounds 5 assists

'Stoney' handled the ball extremely for a big guy with 5 assist to 1 turnover ratio. 5 of his 15 rebounds being offensive showing his potential to be an offensive weapon for Eggplant inside in the future.

Maggots vs. amos rogues 124 - 30

Not worth a write-up so will just dish out votes. 5 vs 3 players, neither team looked like they wanted to be there.

3 votes - Maggots - Christian Brakenhoff - triple double - means nothing

2 votes - Maggots - Michael Crookshanks

1 vote - Maggots - Rob Welsh

Shepparton shooters vs. Home Axis 79 - 120

Can anyone break the Axis stronghold on the South? if so it definitely wasn't the Shooters who were made to pull down there pants and spanked.

3 votes - Home Axis - Paco Garrido - 33 points 3 steals 4-7 3pt

Paco's stats weren't as impressive as his teammate Stancu. However his opponents impact on the game was zilch. 14-23 shooting. Nice night for Paco.

2 votes - Home Axis - Irinel Stancu - 28 points 14 rebounds 4 assists

Irinel is well and truly in the hunt for the MVP title after another stellar performance with 13-22 from the field. However his defensive effort was unable to stop a rampaging Junel Viojan.

1 vote - Home Axis - Patryk Urbanowicz - 22 points 11 rebounds 5 assists

Like Stancu he went into a shootout with his direct opponent Journet and this left Journet's impact meaning nothing and ensuring that the Shooters were never in this one. 11-22 shooting for a handy 50% night.

Round 8

Home Axis vs. Western Titans 104 - 92

This was the most anticipated match of the South season so far. It wasn't close to what it promised with Axis controlling the game for a majority, never letting the Titans get close.

3 votes - Home Axis - Irinel Stancu - 28 points 15 rebounds 6 blocks

Stancu keeps rolling shooting 63% and with him scoring 20 of his points in the first half, he was really a major part of the Axis lead that they were able to keep till the final buzzer. 6 blocks caps off a great night.

2 votes - Home Axis - Ignacio Sánchez - 20 points 28 rebounds

Sanchez didnt have the biggest impact on the first half, however when the Titans surged in the 2nd half he was huge on the boards and put in some vital points.

1 vote - Western Titans - Huo Hengquan - 29 points

The tiny chinese shooting guard was big in the for 13 points in the 3rd quarter when the Titans clawed their way back into the game. He shot 6-9 from 3pt range to round out this scoring performance.

Maggots vs. Brisbane Thunder 69 - 88

Maggots looked promising early however couldn't weather the thunder's storm and were overrun after the 1st.

3 votes - Brisbane Thunder - Cristiano Semoni - 32 points 21 rebounds

Semoni shot an impressive 14-17 and dominated his opponent allowing him to score a dismal 2 points in 41 minutes.

2 votes - Brisbane Thunder - He Anfu - 19 points 14 rebounds 4 blocks 4 assists

Anfu shot 7-10 during an efficient also adding 5-5 from the line. On route to his 14 rebounds he was hard on the box-out keeping his opponent to single digits on that front. This just shows how big of a discrepancy the rebounds were between the two sides.

1 vote - Maggots - Christian Brakenhoff - 18 points 7-11 FG

Brak was again the best imo for the Maggots. He was their most efficient scoring player and only played 22 minutes. Consistent again.

Match of the Round

Shepparton shooters vs. Bainsynators plebs 82 - 84

An intriguing match, with the Plebs going out hard and causing all sorts of trouble for the shooters. With both teams playing heavily on the inside, it was expected that the normal culprits, Viojan, Suelves and Terroso would be in control of the game. However Plebs point guard Igor Zahkarov dominated the scoring early with 10 points for his team in the first 6 minutes. Despite Viojan failing to have an impact on the board, he had the defense guessing with the 'Terrorist' picking up 3 fouls in the first quarter. At 27 - 39 in with 5 minutes to go in the 2nd, the game look to change with Terroso picking up his 6th foul, exiting the floor with 12 points and 2 blocks, with perfect shooting from the field and 5-6 at the line. Had Terroso been able to keep his hands to himself the Plebs may have been able to hold their substantial lead. At the half Plebs maintained a 37 - 45 lead with Zahkarov leading all-comers with 18 points. Viojan also exhibiting a nice half of basketball with a 12 point and 10 rebound double double.

After the half the Shooters came out with the momentum cutting the lead to 4 halfway through the third. Although without Terroso the Plebs managed to regroup behind Zahkarov's 26 points at the end of the third to stall the Shooters comeback going into the last 61 - 67 up. 6 minutes left, it looked over and an easy Plebs 'W' leading by 9. But it was not over there... 1.09 on the clock Plebs still lead 76 - 82. But JOURNET hits a huge 3 to bring the Shooters within Striking distance with 40 seconds left. 5 missed free throws out of 6 in the final minute for Igor are about the only blemish on his night, which could have so dearly cost his side with Aragon draining another huge 3. But it was not to be for the Shooters as Viojan missed the tieing fadeaway jumper inside the key. A great close affair and here are the votes.

3 votes - Bainsynators Plebs - Igor Zahkarov - 30 points 3 steals 3 assists

The obvious most valuable player on the court despite feeling the pressure at the line, due to his lack of experience. Shooting 12-25 he lead his team to victory. Not to mention keeping his opponent out of it for large portions of the game.

2 votes - Shepparton Shooters - Junel Viojan - 22 points 19 rebounds 5 assists

He fouled out dangerman Terroso on route to his 10-21 shooting for 22 points. He looked dangerous on the boards and had a hand in some of his teammates baskets. Did the most for the Shooters despite missing the tieing shot.

1 vote - Shepparton Shooters - Máximo Sáenz Aragón - 19 points

Aragon may not have dazzled the stats sheet however held his opposing shooting guard De Filippo to a pitiful 2-16 shooting night. Shooting 50% also helps of course.
