Random soccer thoughts:

Is anyone watching the world cup? The no commercial breaks is really nice. The flopping Dutch doofus (no offense clogs) I saw... not so much. Watched Mexico almost win & it was pretty exciting. (their coach is fat & awesome) But then a flop & a ref awarding the equivalent of a 50 point free throw undoes the entire match. Feels like such a waste of time in retrospect.

Penalty kicks deciding tie games (including the finals) is also awful.

I agree. It's like calling pass interference on a Hail Mary and awarding an extra play from the one. You never see that. I am watching as many games of the cup as possible. The Dutch are one of the more exciting teams to watch. Gotta hand it to Mexico, they were a real shit show a year ago and to be minutes from advancing to quarters 12 months later is incredible.

I think the Americans have a decent shot at advancement. Injuries and a red card make this almost a 50/50 affair. That would be a major momentum build moving forward for the program and statement by Klinsmann.

I haven't watched as much of the tourney as I might have otherwise, but I invested a lot of time watching hockey this postseason since the Kings decided to win in as long a road as possible for the first three rounds. I did watch almost all of the just-concluded Costa Rica - Greece game, though, and that was pretty stunning. Felt like Costa Rica would have had a real gripe if they had lost based on the non-call on the handball not long after their first goal, but I always say that if you're a team that wants to be winners, you overcome adversity or accept that you didn't do enough to win otherwise. Amazing to see them survive being down a man for essentially the final hour and then come up with the quality of penalties they took.

I've watched a lotta of Fiona Apple lately. Does that count?

I've watched as much of the World Cup as possible. It's nice to feel patriotic and get some sort of reward from the team. They finally figured out how to finish a bit. Belgium is scary though, I feel like out midfield is going to need to play well for any chance. I've really enjoyed watching Columbia...I get excited saying James Rodriguez with the accent. It makes me feel cultured. As an Arsenal fan, I just want them to buy a bunch of strikers I keep watchng.

I just flipped on Shrek 2 with the kids a half hour or so ago, but I don't remember there being an apple in there. ;)

They definitely seem more resilient than I remember the US team looking before, too. I think the game against Ghana in past tournaments there's no way they score the winning goal after losing the goal. Maybe they never come back against Portugal either.

I kind of like the World Cup Tonight show on ESPN. (Surprising that ESPN has a non-gimmicky, relaxed show. Without forced positions.) But I'm not the soccer fan you are. Is it the soccer equivalent on TNT's Inside the NBA? Or does it suck for fans like you? (Or Jelme or Hruddey). Oh & Alexi Lalas seems a little like Bill Walton at times.

Of the whole 90's female singer thing you seem to like... I'd probably be most inclined to listen to Poe or Mazzy Star. (Well really I'd go with Portishead & Garbage, but that kind of stays too far off?)

"I wanna kill you. I wanna blow you... (pause) away"
Poe - Angry Johnny: (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lrygAv93Ick)
Poe - Trigger Happy Jack: (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Z8NP0eI4Og)

Mazzy Star- Fade Into You: (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ImKY6TZEyrI)

You'll like 1 of those songs at least. (there's no way you don't like Mazzy Star)

The show is good but Lalas drives me nuts. He picks a stance for the sake of argument and I don't think he always believes what he is saying. I do however enjoy the co hosts either Ley or Tirico. No goofy signature catch phrases or semi witty puns. They both do a good job directing the experts down the cognitive path. Glad ESPN spared us of Kenny Mayne and Stuart Scott there.

Wow, so you do like Poe!
No on the book, but I just put it on my to read list. BTW, her brother actually did a spoken word narration on an alternate version of "Hey Pretty". (from her 2nd album). It's too bad what happened to her career:
the label sold its interest in Poe as an artist and in Poe’s future recordings, in a questionable deal to a wealthy oil executive and longtime Poe fan who bought her contract and kept Poe tied up in court, unable to release new music or perform professionally for nearly a decade
