yeh good point! AFL is pretty much the only sports here that can really be classified as Football, League and Union use their hands much more than their feet.

I don't know about soccer players, cos I don't think they'd stand a chance in Gridiron hahah. THey have hired AFL players though to Punt the ball in the NFL.

Actually, they need to be able to tackle too.

why would they need to tackle?

how can they kick the ball if they are tackling?

from watching a few games, it looks like their job is to kick the ball through the posts while the rest of their team stops the other team from getting through and kicking his ass hahaha

That's a 'kicker', which is a different role from the 'punter'.

The kicker kicks off at the start of the possession and attempts any field goal or extra point conversions. The kick offs are returned down the field by the opposing team, so the kicker will some tackling ability.

The punter kicks the ball away at the end of a failed possession. The punts are also returned down the field by the opposition (unless they are punted out of bounds), so the punter will need to be able to lay some tackles as well.

sounds like you know your gridiron!

Whatever the terminology is, I am talking about the guy that does this:

As you can see, very little tackling involved!
And if he was called upon to make a tackle, I'd bet that he will probably get his ass handed to him when he tries haha

Yeah, I watch it every season. :)

That clip is the kicker I was referring too. They also kick off to start the half and after each score, which is when they need to be able to make the occasional tackle (although it's not their most important skill).

The clip looked pretty damn old, by the way!

DONE! can't wait, a new format again this season... can't complain I guess for a free service. Though they have taken away the substitute captain thing they had last season. THat was a stupid rule... mostly because I was on teh wrong side of it haha.
