Well 0-8 could be extrapolated to 0-16, which is better than 1-17 ;)

All employmers of businesses are paid per hour.

I'm not sure what you mean, haha.

And yes, every system has its problems, I just happen to work in this one and I know just how broken it is. And it's so broken.

lol I mean that any employee of a retail outlet, or is a receptionist or waitress etc are all paid by the hour ;)

Ahhh, ok. Well, only casual/permanent-part timers. If you're on a salary, then you're not paid by the hour, so managers etc of those places aren't. Plus, they're there for a set time - for example, a shift is 8 hours. Then they go home. Lawyers set their own hours, then send a bill, and the client gets a frightful shock.

Ha, this all built from me jokingly saying that you should escape. Basically, I think our system needs massive reform, but we need good people to get into the system to do that. It's only going to change if we change it from the inside. So, I implore you, when you get in, be totally clear and honest. Don't sacrifice your principles to please your file principals. There are too few lawyers who try to do the right thing, and we need to change that :)

It could be, yes. But in a game of BASKETBALL the fact that a player has missed his first 8 shots is irrelevant to whether he will make or miss his 9th shot (and every shot thereafter); therefore the extrapolation is irrelevant.

This is basketball, not maths. Whether a player is more beneficial to his team by keeping an opponent to 1-17 or 0-8 must be answered in a basketball context, not a mathematical context.

Let's look at this in a different way.
Doctor's charge per task, and they charge a sum far higher than would be received if they charged per hour.
How is charging per task any better really?

Also, there are plenty of pro bono lawyers that one can go too instead of paying a lawyer per hour. Also there are law firms with the "No win, no fee" motto.

Well I want to be a clear and honest lawyer, so will try to avoid going down the path that so many succumb too.

If a player has missed 0-8, and I asked you to place a bet on whether the player will make or miss his next shot, what would you bet on?

Has anybody dealt with specialists before? Doctors who specialise in specific cancers and such.

The majority are #$@%ing awful people.

We went to see one and he agreed to do surgery on the cancer, under the clear understanding that we wanted to go in as public patients (we have private cover, but the wait time wasn't very different and it's far far far cheaper).

He gave us the wrong form and when the operation was completed, the hospital informed him of the mistake.

Considering the cancer wasn't cured yet, he refused to see us for a consultation until we settled the $5,000 we owed for the operation.

Asshole.

So we didn't settle with him and saw the only other specialist in sydney for that particular kind of cancer.

These guys are usually the worst of the lot. This type of lawyer is actually illegal in a lot of places. Why? Because the fees they charge if they do win are far, far higher than those that a normal lawyer would charge. So if they win, they take a huge proportion of the fees. They argue that they have to, by accepting other matters that they don't win on (so they don't get paid for) but in reality they almost always do personal injury, which is very open and shut. Fill in a form, send it off, get your cash. They just exploit that.

Let's look at this in a different way.

I go to the doctor or the dentist, and I know what I'm getting done, and what it will cost me. I had an hour in the dentist chair 3 days ago - 4 fillings, and it cost me $480. Was that more than if he charged per hour? Yes. But, you need to consider that I had a 30 minute appointment with him a few weeks ago, that cost me $80. So, $560 for and hour and a half, is about $310 per hour, which is about right for an experienced professional. It evens out, but it does mean they can't overcharge for tasks that they don't complete or do. Charging by the hour - you can take several extra hours and really drain all the cash you can from that file.

They are. They really are. They have a real god complex and think that they're better than other people, because they're a specialist. Arggghh.

Don't get me started on specialists. Had five years of the specialist roundabout with my ex, glad to get off it when we broke up :P

Whatever I would bet on is irrelevant; the fact is, whether he has missed 8 shots in a row, or made 8 shots in a row has no impact on his likliehood of making or missing the next shot.
