Could a clever, dedicated manager arrive at a reasonable approximation of an answer using the information the game already provides?
No, because
(1) too many unknown variables. There are 10 players on the floor, each one with 14 (partially unknown) skills, plus all the team variables, plus a random variable for every shot. The only known thing is "the shot went in/out/blocked"
(2) the game engine is at this point a big mess of layers over layers of incompetent programmers applying full of bugs modifications in response to the demands of whining clueless managers.
The fact is that there has not been a good study based on games data in years.
So yes, the more info we get to navigate through this mess the better.
