Exactly, you never want to tank aimlessly. I've always improved my team after each rebuild, reaching higher levels than before and gaining experience along the way. If I'm not competing for titles I'm going after that #1 draft selection. There is no in between for me. My favorite part of "tanking" is drafting and training US NT prospects; this gives me a goal to focus on while I'm losing.
Normally, if you finish second, it just means you spent too much money to not promote.

LOL, well, that's why I said "Normally"

First, things are a little different in the NBBA....Silver Trophies in the NBBA and the Cup do carry a little value. More importantly, my team is overachieving...I promoted to the NBBA at least 2 full seasons faster than I should have. I am winning NBBA games starting a trainee with less than 18K salary, my starting SG is just 33K.
Last season I had the 5th lowest payroll in the NBBA. In the NBBA there is nothing to promote to, nor is there a promotion bonus or any extra money for winning the championship. It's a little different than in the lower divisions where promotion aspirations create an all or none scenario. In the NBBA being in a position to win a championship has value, especially if you don't have to have the highest payroll in the league to do it...there is a running total of NBBA wins that is tracked, the 100 win club, Trophy Count, etc.
While I still take the position in the NBBA that it's not worth overpaying to finish with anything less than a trophy...there are other variables and measurements to consider. And, 2 more of those Silver Trophies * I tie the all time record for Championship losses in the NBBA Finals and Cup Championship lol
