Match of the round

Whompas Donkeys vs. Shepparton shooters 105 – 101

Shooters took the lead early and led by 8 at HT. A strong 3rd quarter to surge 27-12 brought the donkeys back into the game and they were able to hold onto a narrow win in the last. The match statistics tell the story of the game. All stats were extremely close and then there is the Donkeys 10 more free-throws for 5 more points which was all that was separating these two.

3 votes – Whompas Donkeys – Dewey Bowers – 36 points 15-21 FG

Dewey has made a big impact on the South since arriving at the Donkeys. He appears to be a pure point scoring machine, winning the shootout with Journet shooting an outstanding 15-21 field goals and 6-9 from three. Dewey said after the game ‘you better be bringing some serious OD to stop Dewey!’

2 votes – Shepparton Shooters – Benjamin Journet – 35 points 5-13 3pt FG

Another Frenchman that is impressing in the Fishbowl, Journet coulding go the journey with Dewey failing to get his side over the line shooting only 13-31 and 5-13 from downtown.

1 vote – Shepparton Shooters – Junel Viojan – 19 points 18 rebounds 5 OR

Junel shot 9-15 to go with his game high 18 rebounds. He added 2 blocks on the night for a pretty efficient effort to help Journet to get the Shooters so close.

Brisbane Thunder vs. Mangoloids 56 – 97

This was ugly for the Thunder as the rejuvenated Mangoloids were boosted before this game with the return of their homegrown stars from injury and they beat the thunder like it was their job. It was more like Brisbane clouds for the first three quarters as the Mango’s put it beyond doubt.

3 votes – Mangoloids – Luke McCaskie – 20 points 9 rebounds 7 assists

Luke is in the hunt for the South MVP title and continues to impress with another all-round performance from the future U21 hopeful. Shooting 9-14 along with his 9 rebounds and 7 dimes he will be throwing is hat into the ring as a serious favourite for the title if he can remain fit.

2 votes – Mangoloids – Wazza Tickle – 19 points 5-8 3pt FG

Wazza didn’t score the most or shoot the best but he did hit five 3 pointers which was a key part of the Mango’s outside attack that crushed the Thunder who shot a dismal 0-15 from long.

1 vote – Brisbane Thunder – He Anfu – 18 points 10 rebounds 4 assists

‘He’ was the best Thunder player on the night chiming in with an 18-10 double double and finding his way to the line for 7 FT’s

Maggots vs. Home Axis 66 – 96

Axis just rolls on against the hapless Maggots who remain winless after the 30 point blowout. Axis confident enough to play full court press squashed the maggots over three quarters.

3 votes – Home Axis - Hélder Amatriain – 17 points 7 assists 3 steals

The Spaniard had a nice game hitting 3-8 from three and throwing 7 assists to his teammates who lapped it up while flogging their Maggots opponents.

2 votes – Home Axis - Paco Garrido – 27 points 4 steals

Axis were led by another Spaniard, with Paco hitting a game high 27 points and taking a couple of steals away with him aswell.

1 vote – Maggots - Christian Brakenhoff – 20 points 7 rebounds 5 assists

Brak is still the only Maggot to fire shots at his opponents leading his team with an all-round performance along with a couple of steals and a block on defense.

MVP Leaderboard(after round 5)

The South MVP is still wide open with no clear favourite with the 4 leaders holding the field at bay on 9 votes. They better look over their shoulders because Dewey Bowers since joining Whompas Donkeys has been unstoppable on offense picking up two Player of the game performances.

We are a bit behind, but we will catch up with round 6 hopefully soon. If anyone wants to help out by doing a round send Leeroy or myself a bbmail and we will be thankful for your help

Round 6

Getting towards the business end of the season there were some tough matchups this round. Lets start with the game between the two league rivals, both competing for promotion in the challenging III.6 league. What sucks the most is this is PP's first attempt at the MVP write ups, and the first match to write up is the demoralising loss to said rival, Home Axis.

Home Axis v Possum Chasers(35545878)

Home axis has done nothing but impress the first half of season 16. Coming from nowhere (literally, he tanked last season), this is a man with a plan. He hammered home another big victory, 34 points over PP's chasers, who in their defence had two starters out with injury. Spectators would have been able to predict the result of this match in the first 30 seconds, with Sanchez winning the jump, and Amatrian assisting Urbanowicz' first of 27 points in 9 seconds, closely followed up by the Chasers star, TT, whistled for a travelling violation. The writing was on the backboard...

3 votes – Helder Amatrian (SG) - Home Axis
Really tough call for the three votes but this guy played great, with 21 points, 3-5 from outside, 5 assists, a few boards and an equal game high rating all in a shorter time than his teammates.

2 votes – Irinel Stancu (PF) – Home Axis
When you take the game high 21 boards, score 20 points shooting at 50%, block 5 shots and throw in 3 assists as a cherry on top, it is no wonder Irinel is on top of the MVP leaderboard.

1 vote – Trinh Trinh (C) - Possum Chasers
'Bias' I hear the crowd calling, and this is a tough call to give TT a vote when his team was hammered. And I had actually written up a vote for Paco here, but when looking at the matchup ratings TT did dominate the C position and kept the high waged Sanchez to just 6 points. 17 boards, 3 assists and a couple of steals ain't bad too, right?

Whompas Donkeys v Western Titans (35545877)

Well, the donkeys had the right idea, trying to slow down the pace of this match with a Patient offence. Unfortunately for them there is no slowing down the Titans, who Pushed the Ball to a 34 point victory. The donkeys Dewey Bowers did his best, and high scored 40 points (the next best was 9) but it was costly, only hitting 14-40.

3 votes - Uditi Samdup - Western Titans
He high scored for the Titans, hitting 9-12 FG, he took 9 boards and kept the opposing Centres to 4 and 2 points respectively. Rated 16, this guy is for mature audiences only.

2 votes – Norbert Carey – Western Titans
Another really tough decision. The Titans are so well rounded now that there are 7 players getting similar ratings, and 4 could have laid claim to the two points. I think Norb deserves them though, for shooting 5-9, getting 11 boards and 4 assists and 3 swats. Plus he is an Aussie, and that deserves encouragement!

1 vote – Dewey Bowers – Whompas Donkeys
If this was a league game, then the comment at the bottom night have been “Dewey looked like the only one playing out there!”. This guy was undoubtedly the Donkeys MVP, shooting 40 points to the next best of 9. But patient offence tends to do that, and he wasn't exactly economical. 1 point to you, Dewmeister.

Eggplantpopolopolous (82) v Mangoloids (67) (35545875)

OK, so the only thing tougher than writing a MVP is actually pronouncing Eggplants team name, it took me 5 minutes to make sure I got the letters in the right order. Anyway, lets shorten it to Eggplant for the moment! This was the battle of the Fruit vs Vegies and was the first match this round that actually resembled a competition. Both teams played Push the Ball, but mango went the 3-2 zone. This was the right idea, because Pisanu was the danger man, it didn't stop him though, and it possibly allowed the Eggplant bigs to get in there and control the inside. Mango started well and kept with the Eggplant until the final period, where it became the Pisanu and Arranz show, the Eggplants dishing out 33 points to 16.

3 votes – Nicola Pisanu - Eggplantpopolopolous
This guys name means he needs to be bloody good to avoid cyber ballyard bullying, and instead of getting pissed on, he does piss on u. The start of the 4th he hit a 3 point 9 seconds in, if Mango was watching he must have known that was it.

2 votes – Igotz Arranz - Eggplantpopolopolous
Any shot Nic missed in the 4th, the cry from the court was 'Igotz the rebound' and he did - pulling down offensive boards and defensive ones when it counted, totalling 22.

1 vote – Sofronio Mabutol - Mangoloids
The big main Mango man kept his team in it with 16 boards and 20 points shooting at just less than 50%, but where was he in the 4th? Actually, he was there but perhaps the frustration of the game getting away from his team was to much, and he lashed out, his only personal foul being a flagrant in the final minutes.

amos rogues (0) v Brisbane Thunder (25)

Umm, damn you Zyler and your day trading ways!? This one is a wipe out, a forfeit, an epic failure to put even 3 $1K scrubs on the court to give the Thunder the chance at some MVP votes. Let the disrespect flow people!

(Makes the MVP write up a little faster though...)

Maggots (56) v Bainsynators plebs (87) (35545876)

The Maggots actually left the arena during the second period, preferring to go and feast on the rotting flesh of a dead possum (slaughtered by Home Axis). They did manage to get 4 points somehow though while isolated outside by Bainsy. The next period after the half they were new Maggots, and came back to win that period 23 -17. It didn't last, and Bainsynators players held a plebiscite, and voted they were better than the average plebeian – bringing it home strongly for the win.

3 votes – Xavier Suelves – Bainsynators plebs
Bainsy's no1 Spanish pleb - the X-box - hit 6-6 FT, shot 9-14 FG, took 16 boards and 2 steals. He intimidated every maggot on the court with his giant stature of 7'5” and 3 inches of afro this guy is a man mountain.

2 votes - Antonio Terroso – Bainsynator plebs
Tough call here for the 2 votes, the 14 boards seals it though. He wasn't particularly active in the 4th, but
it was garbage time after all.

1 vote - Christian Brakenhoff - Maggots
Playing at small forward is a tough gig, but this young Aussie did it well. Top scoring for the Maggots, he was also their top rebounder and assister, and had 3 steals and 3 threes. And he top rated. Man, he is the best Maggot by far.

OK finally a match worthy (just) of the title: MATCH OF THE ROUND!
Geelong Vipers (76) v Shepparton Shooters (67) (35545879)

It was like these teams realised they needed to put on a good show, playing inside 'the guild' – the amos rogues massive home court. Although with 12410 attending It was still only just over half full – still that's a bigger crowd than both these teams are used to. Shep took the first period by a point, and if I hadn't used my dead possum pun in the previous write up I would use it again – maybe something about people from the country and collecting roadkill? Because in the second period the Shooters just weren't there, scoring just 5 points to the Vipers 24. The shooters came back hard though maybe pushing a little too hard, with both Junel Viojan and Prelazzi fouling out, in fact the question was asked later if the Shep Boys thought it was actually a pre-aranged punch up with the Geelong boys (the rivalry runs deep for biggest country city in Vic), 20 fouls to 11 showed Geelong came there to play ball, not fight.

3 votes – Francois Cartier Geelong Vipers
This match was won in the 2nd period, and it is clear to see that this is when Francois Frenchy stepped up. Getting board after board, and even pulling off the offensive rebound from his own missed freethrow, and scoring the two. 3 assists and 3 blocks and 3 votes.

2 votes - Makarios Gkonias Geelong Vipers
The MG cruised with 15 boards completing the Vipers dominance of the inside court. Playing at PF should have been harder against Junel...

1 vote – Benjamin Journet Shepparton Shooters
When his teammates were fouling left right and centre, Benny kept his cool only dropping the 1 foul (he didn't want to be left out of the fun entirely). Top scoring for the Shooters and doing it pretty efficiently too.
