Round 7Home Axis vs. Yarra Park Bears 87 - 78
(36141645)With the Bears up the top of the South standings, having an outstanding season, they should be favourites against a Home Axis side that has been up and down so far this season, boasting a 2-4 record. Recent solid performances have to give them a chance to steal a win and move up the table.
At the end of the 1st the Bears led 20-23 over a spirited Axis side who was being led by big guys Manzanera and Gartmayer. This game continued to get tighter in the 2nd with the Bears holding Home Axis at bay and leading by 5 at the half. Reda had 10 points at the half while Garrido showed up in the 2nd to have 12 at the half for Axis.
Home Axis suffered a blow early in the 3rd with an injury to Manzanera. A strong 3rd quarter surge from Home Axis saw them grab the lead 65-60 with a quarter to go. Gartmayer leading the team with 18 points 6 rebounds and 3 assists. A great performance for Home Axis as they ran away to a 9 point win against the table toppers, making the South very interesting heading towards a close.
3 votes – Home Axis – Phillip Gartmayer – 24 points 12 rebounds
Gartmayer played a pivotal role in his teams look inside offense, shooting 11-17 for his game high points and rebounds.
4 assists for the big guy caps of a great night for his team. If they continue this kind of form Gartmayer could find himself in with a chance for a top 10 finish.
2 votes – Home Axis – Paco Garrido – 22 points 7 assists 7 steals
Paco shot 40% from the field for his 20 points. But most notably he will now be known as Paco ‘quick hands’ Garrido after pickpocketing the Bears 7 times, also finding time to dish out 7 tasty dimes.
1 vote – Yarra Park Bears - Kazimierz Reda – 19 points 11 rebounds
Reda fought hard all game but couldn’t quite lift his team over the line. A handy double double from Reda meaning he was the best Bear and gets a vote.
