I just realised...Run and Gun must be the 3 point shooting offence. But I dunno if that offence includes drive and kick out or is just pass and shoot.


I haven't played either RNG or Princeton, so I don't know how it works in BB, but philosophically, the two tactics are polar opposites. In RNG you're going for high tempo, take the first shot. You're not even looking for a guy making a cut inside. Princeton is more methodical and requires very good passing. The ball is in constant motion looking for a cut or an open shot.

The Suns play a pick-and-roll style offense and to my knowledge there's nothing to mimic that in BB. Unless picks are already being set and we just don't read about it in the commentary.

What about playing like the Magic or Suns - can it be done?


Until then, keep it simple. You have a balanced attack (INEPT low in both) so play base offense and let the game engine look for your opponent's weaknesses.Play the defense that could thwart your opponent's preferred attack. Otherwise, stick to MtM.

Don't get fancy until you beef up the quality of your players. Decide on a training scheme, then pick an offense that will eventually work with that scheme.



100% agree. Although, if Base is too vanilla for you, Motion works as good if not better, for a team with poor skills. The more specialized tactics are for teams that clearly have a strength in that area. You wouldn't get too technical playing a pickup game with the neighborhood kids, and that's essentially what you start with in BB.

I didn't say I wanted my team to start playing like the Magic or Suns. I just wanted to know from the more experienced players here if it could be done with this game's engine.


My mistake.

My observations from long ago and today are that RnG is the newbie recipe for abject failure.

Myself, I plan to begin a lobbying effort for the GMs to add "Auburn Shuffle" to list of available offenses. That's what I would like my team to run. None of the current options comes close.

The Auburn Shuffle could be described as a slow-down version of 'Look Inside'. It is a patient offense that looks for layups, and eschews three's. So it is not Princeton, either. I want my team to hold the ball and cut to the basket; take time off the clock. Jump shots only if the patterns run can't bring a layup try.

But that's where you're wrong. The rules don't talk about specific tactics in any detail. There's no mention of how any particular offence is run or what kind of attributes are needed for what position. Which is just fine, that element of the unknown makes it more fun for the players.

But I wanted to know from other players what they thought of how a certain tactic works. And if a certain tactic from real life applied to this game. So if you know in greater detail how the look inside tactic functions, it would be helpful if you could share.

Finally, a truly informative post. So that's how the engine is...at least the skeleton of it I suppose.

Thank you for taking the time to share.

You say the engine simulates the real game. If I can gain some further insight from you, how close would you say the engine is to actually nailing the real thing? Honestly, I'm just curious because I can imagine how difficult that must be.

Why they don't close up shop, move to Vegas, and become billionaires is beyond me.
I'm just glad they haven't.

Once I scored a basket that still makes me laugh.
