I'll have some of what you're having...

Keeping an opponent 1-17 has prevented more points than 0-8.

Since 1-17 allowed 2 from a possible 34... and 0-8 allowed 0 from 16...

Prevented 32 points vs 16 points.....

Let's play with numbers!

Yes, but at the end of the day who failed to prevent the most shots? The guy from 1-17 failed to prevent a shot, and thus was less valuable than the guy that succesfully prevented every shot ;)

If we are playing with numbers, 0 beats 2 :P

Well 8 is only just under half of 17, so considering the small sample size it is quite safe to extrapolate slightly.
Well a guy that shoots 1-1 isn't better than a guy that shoots 999-1000 because the first guy only gets 2 points and the other guy gets 1998 points, and so obviously contributes more. The same applies here because one guy allowed 2 points to be scored whilst the other guy stopped every shot! :P

You also can't assume that he's going to miss them

therefore it's inconclusive like i said in the first post hahahhaa

anyways, in a more serious note, we can only calculate on the available data. So Mathematically, 100% blockout is much better than 95% block out. this is fair i reckon, Maths is unbiased.

But we can say that if a defender kept 2 players 1-17 from the field in a game, that's more impressive than if they kept an opponent 0-8, purely because they stopped more shots (16 stops vs 8)

Well this is pretty much personal opinion more than anything. I'd say lets Maths do the talking, there's no personal feeling involve.

But he allowed 2 points. At the end of the day it doesn't matter how many points are stopped, it only matters how many points you fail to stop because those are the points that make up your opponents score.

By stopping 16 shots he thwarted 16 offensive possessions regardless of how many points were scored. That's a potential 32 points stopped, as opposed to 16 points and 8 possessions.

That's what I think anyways.

A wise man once said "that nothing will withstand the force on constant analysis" - i believe this discussion is a perfect example of this!
