Love the age, love the potential, love the salary, love the height for a SF/PF, love the secondaries but at nearly the end of the season and one stat greater than respectable it makes me worried. My salary calculator tells me that in this entire season of training you have moved his salary from $4 1/2k to $6k. Stick with him and he could be someone special some day, really special, maybe on the senior NT. For now, B!

Remember Michael Jordan was cut from his high school basketball team, so would Garrie.

I'll give him an A- and nickname him the Abbadon.
I would love to draft a player like that cos the skill sets, height and potential are just perfect for a SF trainee.

He could very well compete with adam_guns SF for a senior NT role in the near future.

1) Elram Varsano (20140887)
Really disappointing. Yes he is 18 and great height but he has low potential and looks like someone that was just drafted with one pop in passing. Only two primaries respectable at this stage is really bad. Horrible secondaries Grade D.

2) Baltrus Gaidulevicius (18108941)
Very similar to Elram and a year older. The potential is much better but he is nearly 20 and most would be upset with their 18 year old looking like that at this stage. Grade E.

3) John Norman (18868461)
Your original player I assume, so you must continue to train him and the good news is he is probably the best of these three, but only just. The defence is fantastic but everything else looks a long way behind. Grade C.

You purchased your trainees for $520,000 and $221,000... I don't have that kind of money to spend on trainees considering my team is all of 8 weeks old. Comparing the trainees of a div 2 team that has been around for 5 seasons with a div 4 team that has been around 5 minutes is a bit ridiculous.

Elkram may have lower potential - but he can still reach a salary for around $35k, which is all I really need to start with. He's not going to be in my team forever, but I need to start somewhere, without spending a fortune on a player with perfect potential, perfect height and every secondary skill known to man.

Baltrus will train quickly. I'd much rather start a couple of levels behind and build from there, rather than spend much more money for a few extra levels of skill.

I started with John and he's coming along nicely. I trained outside def first, so obviously everything else is way behind. He won't take long to catch up though, I'm a patient person and am trying to build my players slowly.

Obviously having trainees with great potential and fantastic secondaries would be good, but I'm not prepared to spend all my money on them this early in my buzzer career. I'm in no hurry here... I don't need to have the best players, I'm happy to wait, spend my money wisely and train slowly.

You sound angry but I thought you asked for an opinion.

Why not?

This is where I will probably disagree with everyone else, I think when you start out you should spend almost all of your money on trainees and close to nothing on established players. I wish I had! Every new player gets $250,000 as well as an extra $50,000 bonus a week for the first few weeks.

You can pick up random crappy 33 year olds that can kick butt in division IV for less than $50,000 later and not have to worry about their salaries all season. Instead that starting money should be used to get an outstanding trainee and Justs my $221,000 man isn't even outstanding.

But if I had single position trained him from day one (he has had 100% two position training and hasn't gotten 48+ every week as he is no 5 in importance in my training) he would probably be something like this at the end of the season.

Justs Saukans (16948525) Small Forward
Weekly salary: $ 18 699
Age: 20
Height: 6'1" / 185 cm
Potential: allstar
Game Shape: strong
Jump Shot: prolific Jump Range: respectable
Outside Def.: sensational Handling: average
Driving: proficient Passing: respectable
Inside Shot: pitiful Inside Def.: proficient
Rebounding: respectable Shot Blocking: average
Stamina: mediocre Free Throw: pitiful

How is that a bad investment?

Spending money on trainees is spending it wisely in my opinion.

Wrong!

Funny look at most of the successful teams in our league (that didn't start like 7+ seasons ago) like Kynlala Knights, SASTROOPERS, Da Fat Boy Slim, Koopasaurus, Western Titans, Possum Chasers, Melbourne Goldfish and me and we have trained up our own star players.

Obviously starting in season 14 you are a fairly new team but also you drafted this guy:

Venugopalan Kumar (18085735)
Small Forward
Owner: Gamões
Weekly salary: $ 5 341
Age: 19
Height: 6'8" / 203 cm
Potential: hall of famer
Game Shape: mediocre

Ok he was 19 but he is amazing, I would have loved to have drafted such a guy. That was a brilliant trainee you should have kept, or an extra $300,000 to buy one you did like more. Even your second round pick was not great but was ok.

Gastone Brighetti (18085742)
Point Guard
Owner: Retired
Weekly salary: $ 4 162
Age: 19
Height: 6'5" / 196 cm
Potential: star
Game Shape: average

Overall you are doing a fantastic job, much better than I did in my first season. Keep up the great work and I think you have promotion in the bag.

How do you know he was amazing? Do you know his skills?

He had atrocious passing/handling and atrocious inside shot. One of his respectables was in shot blocking. Suddenly not such an "amazing" trainee.

Gastone was total ass.

Basically your advice to new players is to spend all your money on gun trainees. I think plenty of people might disagree with you.

Should new players buy trainees? Yes. Should they spend all their initial money to do it? Probably not. Do the first trainees a new player buys need to be a perfect height, have great potential and awesome secondaries? Definately not. Those type of trainees can be purchased after the new player is financially stable, has a good grasp of the tactics and has a plan in place regarding which skills they want to train. Rushing out and spend all your money on trainees at the very beginning can be dangerous.

I disagree..
A new team in div4 should be looking to promote to to div2 asap!

Blowing all that cash on a trainee is not going to help you promote as fast..
this is what I would do if I was in div4 right now

Buy 6 guard trainees, wouldn't pay more then 50k for each trainee.. 18 yr olds can be bought for about that price.
Do 2 position training the whole way... Sell them for a handsome profit later on.

Don't spend too much on staff.. level 1 PR, level 1 doctor, level 4/5 trainer.

Buy some good cheap 29 yr olds or older veterans to fill the rest of your roster eg SF, PF and C positions.
Manage their minutes and gameshape properly. Try to get 22-0 cos winning gets you more money from arena attendance.

Spend the rest your cash on upgrading your arena gradually...
Spend 10k every week on scouting.

Here is an example of a team that personifies what I have just summarised =P
None other than the legendary BC toroo(32664)
