To all Candidates:

1. How would you plan your approach to improve our U21 team? :)

2. What is your criteria on selection the national players?

3. Do you have plans to acquire a UAE player?

Hi Bud

Excellent questions to start the debate.

1. Starting point to work with the previous national manager in order to pick up from his work. Then once i have a better understanding of the skills of the national players, try to identify the weaknesses and the strengths of the team and plan to improve those. That will be done in two ways
a)On an individual basis, i.e player, that means working with managers that own the players to create a schedule of training and make sure we improve the skills that are required. Keep in mind that the national U21 has two important roles, one of course to be strong as a team and go up in the world ranking, but second and more important to identify and create great players for the big national team. Its like a work in progress thing that makes the most of players at the young age of 18-21 and accelerates training so they are as strong as possible for the big team.
b)On a team basis, check the strategies used both in attack and defense and try to improve those based of course on the skills of the players in the team. As I am sure you know, given your experience, different strategies require different skills so its very important to make the most of the skills that the players in the team have.

Also in my agenda, another very important thing to improve the U21 is the work with the young players that are not on the team. You see the team has 18 players, but as an U21 manager, an important role is to have a list of other players, who are talented and are improved every week. These players create an excellent pool to pick players for the national teams, both the U21 and the big one. There are examples of players across the world, that did not make it to their U21 team, but with constant training and communication and an excellent plan, when they were 22-23 they made it to the national team of their country. So its very important to work with these young players and I plan to organize this with the managers of their team. Communication with managers in UAW community is very very important.

2. Criteria for selection, is simply the best players for the team. The best 18 players will be the ones making the team. As for what skills are required for team, once i have a look at the current level of the team, and i understand the skills, then i will have specific criteria in terms of skills and game shape (which is very very important) and make these criteria known to everyone so every manager can have a target for their training. Of course different criteria per position. Now there might be cases when there are similar players with similar skills, the criteria then will be the willingness of the managers to train players and how committed they are in the future of these players. I know having a national team player in your team, means you have to make sacrifices and sometime make the player a priority instead of your own team, and of course for me this is very important so if there are similar players, but one manager shows commitment in the training of his player, then this manager will be rewarded.

3. The reason i am putting my name for position of U21 team is not to buy young player or to make money out of buying-selling of player. I am of the opinion that players should be bought by the right managers and managers that have the time, dedication and enjoy training players for national team. As a manager of the U21 team, my time will be dedicated to organizing, planning and communicating the best way of improving players and managing a U21 team. That means sacrificing my own team, or making my own team, Aris London, less of a priority, as a result i would not be the right manager to have a player and train them. Of course having said that, if a player is available, either as free agent or retired, and noone is buying him, or is being bought by someone who doesn't want to train, then i might interfere to try and find the best solution for the player and the U21 team

Hi Bud.

Thanks for your questions.

1. How would you plan your approach to improve our U21 team?

First of all, I already scouted all UAE players of this years' draft. This way, I could keep track of the UAE talents.
As we do in the German Scouting Process, I would contact all Managers of the talents to ask them about the training and give them hints how they can make their talent more valuable to the UAE U21 team.
Moreover, I would try to scout all older players, by looking at the UAE teams, the older U21 teams and permanently watching the transfer list.
Again, for all players found I'll contact their managers to learn about the training plans.
I'd apply a technique I am using in the German scout team, where we try to "grow" role players to be able to play different strategies - this is especially important for Small Forwards.
I'll try to keep the U21 as attractive as possible by different forum activities to keep the managers motivated.
Finally, I will apply my tactical and strategical knowledge and my diplomacy skills. About tactics and strategy, I don't want to publish too much in a public forum.

2. What is your criteria on selection the national players?

The national team will consist of players, whose managers keep an update on the shape of the player.
The selection of players should allow different tactical lineups, e.g. should allow both inside and outside tactics. I am a fan of role players, e.g. strong passers and defenders which may lack some range in the case of of inside tactics. Or Small Forwards which are strong shooters from the outside and strong inside defenders to play against teams that use a Power Forward or even a Center on position 3.
If possible, I want to add younger (<21 years) players to the team, if I believe that those players will serve their county well in the future.

3. Do you have plans to acquire a UAE player?

I'd love to acquire an UAE guard talent. Maybe someone like Mousa Al-Anwar (19969788)?!

Best regards
Konrad

Very nice answers

May i ask you two questions

1. Will you bid for Mousa?
2. Why have you chosen UAE? Why dont you try to win the German U21, since you are German?

thanks

Hi Pikaso.

1. Will you bid for Mousa?

Let's say he is bookmarked :-)

2. Why have you chosen UAE? Why dont you try to win the German U21, since you are German?

I don't run for the German U21, because I am loyal to the current U21 coach, who is candidating for his third campaign.
I've chosen UAE because I like meeting friends in other parts of the world. A friend of mine originates from UAE and I hope to win him for translations or intercultural lectures if necessary :-)

Regards
Konrad

Thanks for your answers Konrad

In your opinion what do you think will be the biggest difficulties in running the U21 in UAE and how do intend to overcome them?

Pikaso

Hi Pikaso.

I don't see difficulties, but challenges (I am always thinking positive :-)).
I have detailed plans on how to install an UAE scouting system and keep the managers motivated to train their talents.
Those plans are basing on my experiences as German Scout and German National Team public relations manager.
One challenge I see is the time difference (UAE managers might have to wait some hours for an answer). The other might be the language, but as written before, I hope to have a solution in place.

Best regards

thanks for the answer, Pikaso and Konrad :) so I guess out of 13 candidates..2 are the only serious and valid candidate

Currently UAE 21 is rank 78th, the highest rank reach by U21 is 49th or 50th led by French Coach Patman.

What will you do first to improve this team?

What do you guys think we can do, to improve our roster development system to generate more quality (good) UAE players in the future?

U21 manager is about training, Can you give us name(s) of the player(s) you previously train or currently train that you can be proud of.

thanks.

Down to 2 managers, this will be easier to us...its like selecting Black or White, Yes or No, pass or shoot

Hi Bud.

Besides setting up a scouting system (see below) I'll gather players in the U21 that will form up a team of high tactical flexibility.

I want to setup a scouting system like the one we use in Germany. It consists of a private forum, to which the U21-coach, the NT-coach and the scouts have access. There, the development of players is tracked and their training is dicussed.
In addition, there will be an Excel-based evaluation of the players. As I wrote, I'll take care that we develop a variety of player types that leave us plenty of tactical options. I'll keep contact to all managers of talents to make sure that the players a trained as good as possible. And I wrote a program that automatically scouts all drafts to find the best talents.

Good question!
Sure... Udo Bergh (9336084), last's season MVP and my own draft pick.
Filip Nesse (2338986), former U21-player Norway.
Evgen Pogrebnyak (10928320), former U21-player Ukraina.
Ahmet Efe Canbolat (17279686) likely becomes U21-player of Cyprus this season.
