Fishbowl West MVPs Round 6 Part 1

After this we will be finally caught up. Can Mllama or Monkeybiz or whoever add them all in to the current standings? Thanks.

Black Label Society vs. Lewisham Wombats 103 - 89

Probably the two most prestigious teams in the league or in all of Australia for that matter. We are honored to have them here. This was a battle of the NT coach vs the ex-U21 team coach and unfortunately some of the Wombats looked like that was where they belonged with for example the normally outstanding Aggelos Panagiotopoulos having just 4 points and 4 rebounds and fouling out in 30 minutes. His miserable failure to grab any rebounds highlighted the big factor in this game, BLS dominated the boards 58-35. Game over!

3 Martinho Caio Black Label Society 31 PTS 9 REB 12-17 FGS 18.5 rating. 18.5! There must be something special about this guy to get ratings like this as a $118,000 guy when we had the $350,000 man Fanis Zoumpadellis in our league last season and he was typically getting 13.5 - 17.0 (his best and once only). What did that extra $230,000 a week get you?

2 Algirdas Trimailovas Lewisham Wombats 27 PTS 7 REB. While his 27 points was a team high it was his 7 rebounds from the SG position that was what the team needed. If the forwards 4/4/0 had done as well there may have been a different result.

1 Grgur Fatur Black Label Society 20 PTS 12 REB 18.0 rating. Grrrr, Fatty, The Man Who Needs a Vowel...whatever you want to call him his game is no joke and the beating he put on Aggelos this game was outstanding.

On appeal this has changed. Go Grrrr! C-Cat said:

So I agree with old man dire, he can have this, swap the votes to

3 - Caio
2 - Fatur
1 - Trimailovas

Whitebeard vs. Pancakes with Jam and Cream 89 - 94

The Shark's latest recruit the normally amazing Whitebeard continues to struggle in the tough West this season. With wins over only Viral Infections and VictoriaMages this must count as a very disappointing start. Backing up a 6 point loss to the Boys with this 5 point loss shows how close they are, but they just can't seem to get over the hump. Tactically they had it right with their Low Post having an easy time against the 3-2 zone for Cream. After trailing 14 early in the 4th they made it a 4 point game with 3 minutes to go but just traded baskets from then on and couldn't close the margin.

3 Plínio Couto Costa Pancakes with Jam and Cream 34 PTS 5 REB 5 AST 18.5 rating. Perhaps he heard the doubters and came back with a Dirk-like performance. Whatever happened there is little doubt that this was am amazing performance, even more so considering it was a look inside offence.

2 Joachim Calzado Whitebeard 17 PTS 7 AST 16.5 rating. He did what every good PG is supposed to do, passed the ball well into the low post and when it came back out nailed the shot. He also played the best defence on the team.

1 Maciej Kuman Pancakes with Jam and Cream 21 PTS 16 REB 4 BLK 17.0 rating. Not just great numbers but he shot 9/13 from the field. Normally a good free throw shooter he did choke a little.

Fishbowl West MVPs Round 6 Part 2

Baxter Bogans vs. Zazzocalypse 85 - 65

The match of the round with the top two undefeated teams going head to head turned out to be an anticlimax with the Cinderella run of Zazzocalypse ending in a smashing like some overachieving team in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament. Zazzocalypse shot badly (players like Meneau 7/30 and Villarreal 2/11 shot their team out of this game), were totally outrebounded and looked nothing like the amazing superteam who are 12-1 in league (threw one game to buddy Chumunga), in the top 16 of the Cup (with a good chance to make the top 8) and have beaten Koopasaurus, Whitebeard and Kynlala Knights three ABBL teams already this season in the PL.

3 Giovanni Castaldo Baxter Bogans 22 PTS 17 REB. When they looked inside more than likely the Bogans saw Giovanni and he didn't let his team down contributing to a prominent (high) inside scoring rating.

2 Donats Lopinš Baxter Bogans 12 PTS 7 AST 5 REB. And who got the ball inside? Donats! He also had the second best rating for the Bogans and got to the line where he was 6-6.

1 Chiu Choong Kuan Zazzocalypse 11 PTS. Hard to find anyone worthy of points on Zazzocalypse but at least Choo Choo was efficient hitting 5/7 FGS. Needs to hit the boards much harder (7 in 39 minutes).

Koopasaurus vs. Monkey Business 87 - 95

Monkey Business won in OT.

3 Gabriele Messineo Monkey Business 24 PTS. Shot a lot.

2 Wazza Kennerley Koopasaurus 24 PTS. Big 3 forced OT. Only Sauron trying in OT.

1 Sepehr Asghari Koopasaurus 32 PTS. Top scorer.

Fishbowl West MVPs Round 6 Part 3

Viral Infections vs. Kynlala Knights 47 - 106

The Infections had a very detailed plan for success this season. Tank for half a season then get an ABBL standard team and win every game for the rest of the season and promote, time seems to have run out. Only one word needed to describe this game: Spank!

3 Shaun McArthur Kynlala Knights 20 PTS 8 REB 16.5 rating. Didn't just score at will and defend like a demon but was also very efficient hitting 8/12. He really showed the 2K role player who was guarding him who was the boss.

2 Pitama Tau Kynlala Knights 18 PTS 14 REB. Actually had to fight against a real player a $150,000 real player. Funny that Naker has a $150,000 guy but not even a $1,000 5th player.

1 Duong Tôn Kynlala Knights 21 PTS 9 AST. Most impressive was keeping Naker's real guard to 0-12 shooting.

Billy Hoyles Boys vs. VictoriaMages 96 - 89

There was little prevarication here as the deceptive Mages made this a good one. They bluffed the Boys with their base and man to man tactics and their efforts on the boards was no fabrication winning 55-47. However while the Boys passed the ball well the Mages omitted the extra pass (assists 18-11). A high turnover count especially the 7 by the bandit Bandiera didn't help the Mages. Finally they say the free throw line doesn't lie and that was where the truth finally came out as the Boys had the game winning margin at the charity stripe (13/19 to 7/9).

3 Mikey Bergman Billy Hoyles Boys 25 PTS 15.0 rating. It is no exaggeration to say Mikey was on the court when the best tings happened for the Boys, with the best +/- in the game, the best defensive rating in the game and 5 made free throws he was the difference maker.

2 Michelangelo Forato VictoriaMages 20 PTS. He was barefaced and ice cold, he made the big shots under pressure and his 9/15 shooting was what the Mages needed more of.

1 Mai Chongzheng Billy Hoyles Boys 25 PTS 6 REB. Socred well but needs to be a little more efficient to move up in the points.

Round 7 MVPs

Lewisham Wombats defeated Koopasaurus (109 - 95)
Poor shooting from the Koopasaurus guards, allowed the Wombats to overcome large discrepancies in rebounding, turnovers anf fouls, and take a fairly comfortable victory.

3. Algaridas Trimailovas (WOM) - 26 points, 5 assists
Trimailovas was lethal from beyond the arc, nailing 6 three pointers enroute to a game high 26 points. His defensive efforts on Asghari were also a big reason for the Wombats win.

2. Roberto Jauregui (WOM) - 17 points, 13 rebounds
He rarely puts up big numbers, and is overshadowed by his big man teammate, but Jauregui rarely fails to put up a double double. Such was the case again here.

1. Wazza Kennerley (Koop) - 19 points, 7 rebounds
Hard to pick a player for one vote here. In the end Wazza gets its for a solid scoring effort - though this could have gone to any of three or four players.

Black Label Society defeated Kynlala Knights (75 - 59)
Stiffling defense was the key to this victory. Shaun MacArthur, in particular, had a night he'd rather forget, as the Society rolled on. The society's dominance inside was also a key.

3. Not GrGur Fatur!
Bah, who am I kidding. Have another three votes.

2. Gary Howarth (BLS) - 6 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists
Looking at his stats, most would say WTF at him getting two votes. However the key to this victory was defense, and keeping MacArthur to 4-25 shooting was probably as important as Fatur's 26 and 11.

1. Eugenio Dell'Asta (KK) - 21 points, 9 rebounds
Dell was the only Knight to really break free, scoring efficiently enroute to a team high 21 points. His importancec to the team is probably highlighted by the +/- totals - in the 40 minutes he was on the court his team was down by 9. In the 8 minutes he was off, his team went down by 7, and turned a close game into a comfortable BLS victory.

Billy Hoyles Boys defeated Zazzocalypse (87 - 75)
Yet again Zazz took it up to quality ABBL oposition, but despite dominating the glass, they just couldn't get past the stifling BHB defense.

3. Mikey Bergman (BHB) - 26 points, 6 assists
Bergman's offensive numbers look impressive, until it is considered that he took 27 shots to get his points. However, the reason he gets this is due to defense, keeping the Frenchman quiet, while racking up 4 steals.

2. Chiu Choong Khan (Zaz) - 14 points, 27 rebounds.
Khan kept his team in it with a dominant performance on the glass. His rebound tally includes a staggering 11 offensive boards, and without his presence inside, this game may well have been a blowout.

1. Gary Lawrence (Zaz) - 18 points, 15 rebounds
Its not often in a loss that a team will get two vote getters, but these two were probably far enough ahead of the Boy's second best player (Massios) to justify it. Like Khan, he was dominant on the glass, and scored efficiently.

Monkeybiz defeated Whitebeard (108-96)
The game of the round. This one went to overtime, and was close throughout, until free throws at the end saw the margin look relatively comfortable.

3. Joachim Calzado (WB) 46 points, 5 rebounds
Calzado almost stole this game for his team with an outstanding individual effort. Not only did he score, his oppentents could not score on him - the opposing PG's went a combined 2-15. He may want to work on his free throws though...

2. Dimitris Patziaras (MB) - 23 points, 13 rebounds
Patziaras started on the bench, but ended up logging the most minutes of the Monkeybiz big men. He responded with a solid game to help his team over the line, taking just 15 shots to get his 23 points and rebounded solidly.

1. Shi Deguang (MB) (23 points, 14 rebounds)
Pretty similar game to Patziaras, so read above (aside from the big about starting on the bench...). Also wins brownie points for managing to avoid shooting to many FTs, given his limited ability in that area.

Baxter Bogans defeated Viral Infections (165 - 47)
I think the scoreline says it all really... Fans who went to this game can consider themselves lucky.

3. Giovanni Castaldo - 57 points, 23 rebounds
Or maybe the fans can consider themselves unlucky, since they spent most of the game being dunked on by Castaldo...

2. Zvezdan Dordevic - 34 points, 12 rebounds, 11 assists
... and Dordevic...

1. Durk Renaud - 20 points, 14 assists, 8 steals
... and Renaud as well (apologies for the short writeup, but its pretty hard to get excited about a game in which a team had one real player for most of the game)

Pancakes with Jam and Cream defeated VictoriaMages (111 - 72)

This blowout completed a Kevin trifecta for the round (whoo hoo). The Pancakes broke this one open with a scintilating third quarter.

3. Plino Couto Costa (PJC) - 29 points
Pretty much pencil this guy in for three votes when the Pancakes win. the Mages defense had no answer, as Plino played every minute and scored at will.

2. Werner Efinger (PJC) - 16 points, 14 rebounds
Efinger is having a sneaky good season, and he continued it in this game. Seemed like he may have slipped a fiver to the refs, as he took 10 FTs, but he also shot well, a slipped in a couple of threes.

1. Roman Jaanus (PJC) - 17 points, 5 rebounds, 3 steals
Jaanus is a bit of a project at SF, but he is starting to put together some solid performances. Nothing spectacular in this game, just a solid efficient scoring effort, some rebounds, and picking a few pockets. Panckaes will be happy if he keeps performing to this level.

Round 8 MVP votes - up nice and quick this time!

Lewisham Wombats defeated Whitebeard (99-90)
The Lewisham Wombat's coach forgot to tell the majority of his players that this game was actually on (yes, I forgot to set my lineup...). Despite that, and a late injury to Goodall, the Wombats eeked out a win in a nailbiter.

3. Joachim Calzado (WB) 53 points
Joachim 'I'm going to take 60% of my teams shots' Calzado was in fine form in this game. He took plenty of shots, hit them at a reasonable clip, and almost single handedly dragged his team over the line. Maybe next time, his teammates can hit a few shots as well...

2. Jackson Goodall (LW) 28 points, 7 rebounds
You could make a case for Goodall to get the three votes in this game, as he was on fire all night, until a late injury ended his night. His points came on just 15 shots, included a couple of threes, and the Wombats have him to thank for their victory.

1. Birol Yalduz (LW) 20 points, 13 rebounds
With Panagiotopolous and Jaruegui failing to turn up for this game, Yalduz was cast into the role of an undersized PF. He performed the role with aplomb, by scoring freely, keeping his opponents quiet, and doing a fine job on the boards.

Black Label Society defeated Koopasaurus (87-72)
Despite keeping Fatur relatively quiet, Koopasaurus couldn't scratch out a victory in this one, as ASghari and Kennerley just weren't given enough support by their teammates.

3. Jose Garza (BLS) 26 points, 13 rebounds
The new boy on the block showed he is going to fit right in, leading the Society to victory in this one with a dominant scoring performance. Does his addition put Fatur's MVP crown under threat?

2. Sepehr Asghari (Koop) 34 points
Asghari put in a solid shooting performance, to keep his side close, and give them some hope of snatching victory. His foul trouble and eventual fouling out probably spelt the end for Koopasaurus' chances in this one.

1. Silvjus Zuras (BLS) 13 points, 11 rebounds, 9 assists
Mr do it all did it all in this game. Agonizingly close to a triple double, there will be a few teammates receiving harsh words for missing shots after Zuras passes, and denying him that one assist needed.

Pancakes with Jam and Cream defeated Zazzocalpse (98-80)
After a brutal first quarter, Zazzocalpse was never in the hunt in this one, as they struggled to stop the PJC big men.

3. Majek Kuman (PJC) 27 points, 9 rebounds
Big Majek was impossible to stop in this game, going an outstanding 13-16 shooting on his way to a game high 27 points.

2. Werner Efinger (PJC) 15 points, 20 rebounds
In an unusual role as a SF, Efinger dominated on the boards. He also scored efficiently, though a few turnovers took some of the shine off his performance

1. Jorge Antonio Villareal (Zazz) 24 points
Villareal was one of the only Zazzocalypse players to get going, shooting well from the outside and leading his team in points.

Monkey Business defeated VictoriaMages (108-96)
Despite comfortably losing the boards, the scoring power of Monkey Business was to much in this one. The Mages will need more defense outside to compete with teams of this quality.

3. Gabriele Messineo (MB) 27 points, 7 rebounds
The Monkey Business shooting guard from Italy showed off his skills in this game, shooting an outstanding 11-17, chucking in a couple of threes, and rebounded well for his position. In addition, he kept Mages danger man Forato quiet.

2. Nicola Bandiera (VM) 23 points, 10 rebounds, 4 steals
Bandiera kept the Mages in the game for a large part of the night, by scoring and rebounding well. He was one of the only Mages to actually get going in this game, however.

1. Zoltan Bui (MB) 14 points, 10 assists
Point guards are probably a little under appreciated in the MVP votes, so time to reverse that trend. Bui had a ripper, scoring efficiently, and setting up his teammates all night long. His defense on Venizelos was outstanding.

Billy Hoyles Boys defeated Viral Infections (109-28)
The Boys smashed the Infections in the weekly ritual. Don't worry noodles, you'll get all of the votes on offer in this one, but also a crap(ier) write up.

3. Anselmo Centurion (BHB) 21 points, 19 rebounds, 6 blocks

2. Gianfrancesco Lucia (BHB) 21 points, 15 rebounds, 4 steals

1. Yishai Keinan (BHB) 18 points, 14 rebounds, 3 blocks

Kynlala Knights defeated Baxter Bogans (97-88)
The game of the round probably, and the one that will have the most influence on the standings. The Bogans surrendered top spot in the fishbowl west, due to a poor shooting effort, in particular from Renaud. With a reasonably soft run home for the Society, the Bogans will have a job on their hands to get the top spot back.

3. Eugenio Dell'Asta (KK) 14 points, 18 rebounds
Dell didn't score that much in this one, but his work at the other end of the floor set this game up. He nabbed a game high 18 rebounds, and destroyed Renaud defensively. A couple of steals and block rounds out this game winning defensive effort.

2. Shaun McArthur (KK) 28 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists
If Dell won the game for his defensive efforts, McArhtur did almost as much on offense. While his shooting wasn't as efficent as we are used to, he managed to get to the foul line regularly, and led the game in assists and scoring.

1. Kalle De Man 28 points, 4 rebounds
Kalle was the best shooter on the floor, shooting well on his way to 28 points, including 5 threes.

Leaderboard - round 8

With none of the top three managing to poll votes, not much changes at the top. The chasing pack has bunch up, with a large group of players now on 9 votes, eyeing off Wazza's third spot. With 3 round left, only Fatur, Castaldo and Kennerley can mathematically win the fishbowl west MVP.

Fishbowl West MVPs Week 9 Part One

Billy Hoyles Boys vs. Baxter Bogans 75 - 90

In this battle between two of the leagues power teams there were contrasting styles as BHB went for the ultra safe base/man to man combo and the Bogans tried out the newisf outside isolation. This did allow their SF Durk Renaud to go off for 31 points but strangely their most efficient scorer was their PF Giovanni Castaldo. BHB won the rebounding battle clearly, had more assists and even one more point of free throws but their poor shooting such as 2-10 and 0-5 (which is better Naker?) meant that the Bogans could take 7 less shot and still win by 15.

3 Durk Renaud Baxter Bogans 31 PTS 6/6 FTS. Durk took advantage of the outside isolation to diggle around and penetrate at will, he scored often but did blow a few open ones.

2 Giovanni Castaldo Baxter Bogans 17 PTS 8/15 FGS. Giovanni could have taken the three points with a little more effort on the boards but 6 rebounds from a PF left the judging panel unimpressed.

1 Yishai Keinan Billy Hoyles Boys 18 PTS 15 REB. When no-one else could score his 5/12 FGs was actually not that bad but his repeated trips to the line where he was 8/10 was an important source of points for the Boys.

Pancakes with Jam and Cream vs. Viral Infections 135 - 27

A 108 point win is impressive, not much else to say except to note Naker couldn't even afford a $1,000 player so he would have 5.

3 Maciej Kuman Pancakes with Jam and Cream 26 PTS 17 REB 11/14 FGS 16.0 rating. In 30 minutes!

2 Roberts Vinkelis Pancakes with Jam and Cream 25 PTS 17 REB 12/16 FGS 16.0 rating. He used his Inside Shot: phenomenal to show the lucky fan that was guarding him who was the boss.

1 Plínio Couto Costa Pancakes with Jam and Cream 31 PTS 16.0 rating. Top scored but needed nearly double the shots.

WRONG MATCH - I HATE DOING THESE TWO WEEKS LATE

But just for interest here was my take, very different from mllama, I guess he is right and I am wrong.

Koopasaurus vs. Black Label Society 72 - 87

Only 6 days before the Society would take the National Cup Koopasaurus put up an excellent effort to keep this one fairly close, with only an 8 point margin coming into the 4th it was anyone's game but then the superior star power and depth of the Society led as usual by Garza and Fatur both playing heavy minutes brought them home. One surprising feature was Koopasaurus playing patient and only getting 12 assists while the Society just chucked the ball inside for 25! Votes are very hard in this one as there are four VERY worthy candidates.

3 José Garza Black Label Society 26 PTS 13 RE 13/20 FGS 15.0 rating. This one is easy, he shot well, top scored and was 1 off the top rebounds.

2 Grgur Fatur Black Label Society 21 PTS 14 REB 16.0 rating. This one is also easy, MVP favorite did not disappoint his fans with another commanding effort, he also had the best +/- in the match.

1 Sepehr Asghari Koopasaurus 34 PTS. This is where I will get in trouble and may make some work for C-Cat. Sepehr single handedly kept Koopasaurus in this game with his scoring and dominated this game for 3/4 (although he threw the ball away a lot), but then he committed a costly offensive foul with 25 seconds to go in the 3rd, was fouled out of the game and sat on the bench the entire 4th while the game was lost. Silvijus Žuras of the Society who was 1 assist off a triple double is contacting his lawyers even as we speak.

Fishbowl West MVPs Week 9 Part Two

VictoriaMages vs. Lewisham Wombats 93 - 113

The Mages tried to trick the Wombats with some outside isolation but the Wombats stayed true and did the right thing playing man to man. The Mages tried to play dirty sending in assassin Enrick Lefèvre swinging but when he fouled out after just 11 minutes the Mages had to face the truth.

3 Aggelos Panagiotopoulos Lewisham Wombats 26 PTS 14 REB. 7 turnovers and 0 assists was the downside but another strong performance by Aggie was highlighted by his 3 spectacular blocks.

2 Birol Yalduz Lewisham Wombats 21 PTS 7 AST 6 REB. The score line was nice but what was better was his control under duress. After "The Assassin" Enrick Lefèvre had hit him 6 times in 11 minutes and fouled out, then it was the turn of "The Apprentice Killer" Wilson Dapula who continued the pain and committed another 6 fouls before fouling out in just 26 minutes. The SF position was a warzone!

1 Michelangelo Forato VictoriaMages 18 PTS 8 AST 5 REB. Forato had a solid all around contribution, most notable in the context of this match for just 1 foul in 42 minutes.

Monkey Business vs. Zazzocalypse 96 - 80

The big battle of the best friends and fellow Guppies had contrasting styles. Monkey went a fast pace and had his usual even contributions while Zazzocalypse went for a slow pace and relied mainly on Jean-Philippe Meneau to get the job done.

3 Marco Manara Monkey Business. Nice.

2 Jean-Philippe Meneau Zazzocalypse. Cool.

1 Eduard Deltell Monkey Business. Great.

Kynlala Knights vs. Koopasaurus 110 - 98

It was the battle of the NT players as Wazza had to face Dell'asta, Ton, Tau and McArthur. He wasn't alone though he has the Prince of Persia, Sepehr Asghari by his side who had another prolific outburst with 54 points.

3 Pitama Tau Kynlala Knights 36 PTS 13 REB 17.5 rating. What can possibly top 54 points? How about 17/19 FGS? Against a 2/3 zone. On the winning team. Incredible!

2 Sepehr Asghari Koopasaurus 54 PTS 17.0 rating. Wow. They really know how to put up shots fast in Iran, 48 shots in 41 minutes, he was lucky he didn't get RSI.

1 Shaun McArthur Kynlala Knights 29 PTS 9 AST. While he was humiliated in defence a little by Asghari he got revenge in offence where Ashhari had better things to do than D up.

Whitebeard vs. Black Label Society 67 - 103

Once again the Society showed how easily they can dominate anyone whose team doesn't have $1.7 million in wages as they scuttled Whitebeard and turned his beard grey. They won the battle of the boards by 64-40, they hit an impressive 23 3 pointers and they left the Buccaneers playing with a lucky fan by the end of the match as three of the shipmates fouled out. Whitebeard scored just 7 in the 2nd and that was game over.

3 Anton Chmelár Black Label Society 26 PTS 14 REB. Normally backing up Grgur Fatur doesn't give you much chance to stand out but in just 19 minutes he poured it on scoring more than a point a minute and grabbing every rebound available. It was the minutes when he was on and not Fatur that the Society pulled away (+/- of +29 to Fatur +/- of +7).

2 Silvijus Žuras Black Label Society 17 PTS 6 REB. His stats were good but even better he kept his man to 2 points for the game and fouled him out.

1 Joachim Calzado Whitebeard 40 PTS. Great performance but with the team getting smashed he has to settle for the 1.
