Season 21 New Breeders' Wrap-up!

Well, Season 21 is done and dusted with only draftees and MVPs to come before we enter Season 22.

This was the first season where the New Breed were monitored as they entered the 2nd tier level of Australian Basketball in BB. And what an impression they made. While there was some debate throughout the season as to who was 'entitled' to be labeled a 'New Breeder' the end results (in terms of performances) for those teams involved only highlighted the two groups that existed beneath that term. So much so that one must separate them.

The Old Breeders:

1. Guanzheng Goldfish (21-1) Champions of II.2
2. Home Axis (18-4) GF runners-up in Div II.2
3. Stone Slashers (15-7) made SF in II.2
4. The Players (15-7) made SF in Div II.3
5. Baxter Bogans (14-8) made QF in Div II.4
6. Hopelessly Addicted (13-9) made QF in Div II.3
7. The Meateors (12-10) made QF in DIv II.1
8. Skjim (11-11)
9. Coalcliff Clippers (8-14)
10. Flaming Ramzays (8-14)

The New Breeders:

1. Awesome^.- (19-3) Champions of Div II.3
2. Moorditj Magick (13-9) made QF in Div II.4
3. UWA Panthers (10-12) made QF in Div II.2
4. Gisborne Gladiators (10-12)
5. Skyhook Dreamers (10-12)
6. Puffy_Inch (7-15)
7. Raz0rbacks (7-15)
8. The Tornado (6-16)
9. Sonic Boom (6-16)
10. Fresh Princes (4-18)

Firstly, the Old Breeders Award which will---from this point forward---be referred to as the 'Big Fish in a Smaller Pond Award' after the Big Fishy became Champions of Div II.2 by defeating the $900k+ roster of Home Axis. Such a win, against all odds, needs to be recognised. More so, his 21-1 regular season record (better than all other returning Div II teams) was the highest. He is also now returning to the ABBL.

Congratulations to the Big Fish and his Guanzheng Goldfish, the inaugural winners of the Big Fish in a Smaller Pond Award.

SPECIAL MENTION: to Axis123 and his team, Home Axis, who were 5 points away from returning to the ABBL.

Secondly, the New Breeders Award which will---from this point forward---be referred to as the 'The Awesome Award' after Sundae09 and his team, Awesome^.- became Champions of Div II.3. What made this feat so impressive as Awesome^.- becomes the 4th team (after Monkey Business, Koopasaurus and Whitebeard) to make the ABBL without ever 'taking a step backwards. That is, he started in Div IV.2, then went to Div III.13, then to Div II.3 and now is going to the big dance. Awesome!

Congratulations to Sundae09 and his Awesome^.-, the inaugural winners of the The Awesome Award.

IMPORTANT: As of Season 22, there will be 2 tables maintained in a new thread labeled 'The New Breed of Div II: Season 22'. It will contain those teams returning to a Div II league (who will be competing for the 'Big Fish in a Smaller Pond Award') and those teams entering Div II for the first time in their teams' history (who will be competing for the 'The Awesome award').

Brilliant work Matty. To add to that here is a repost of something I wrote in the ABBL forums.

The most awesome thing about Awesome^.- is how young their team is. In fact three of those four [new ABBL] teams will be in the four youngest ABBL teams of all time.

Awesome^.- Season 13 played no games offseason so really season 14.
Slam ! Season 11 played no real games just three scrimmages so really season 12.
West Island Tigers Season 10 round 17 and got relegated from division III.
Guanzheng Goldfish (formerly Melbourne Goldfish) Season 10 round 4.
Chelsea Seagulls Season 10 round 2.

So while Slam ! was a spring chicken compared to all of us old farts, Awesome^.- is a baby. To get to the ABBL from in effect season 14 is incredible. This is a team rapidly rising and while I have no idea what their plans are this season they are a team to watch with a brilliant manager.
