I live about 40 minutes drive from the Barossa. I have sampled the Basket Press many times :) I highly recommend you come and tour for a few days. Besides the wine, it is just a beautiful area to drive through, and there are so many little boutique wineries through here that you may not have heard of, but are well worth a visit. Oh, and Seppeltsfield is here - home of the 100 Year Old Para Tawny Port. Old man Seppelt was a bright bugger, he put a barrel of his best port away each year to be opened in 100 years. It's the only wine to have ever scored a 100 in James Halliday, I think (although I tend not to care too much about wine reviews, that's still pretty significant). Ahhh, I love Seppeltsfield - the 21 year old Para is about $80 and that's just an incredible drop, if you like the fortifieds.

Also, guys - girls go NUTS for the Rockford Alicante Bouchet. If you ever want to impress a girl, get her a bottle of that. I find it's a bit overpriced for what it is since there's several cheaper roses that taste pretty much identical (i.e. Turkey Flat) but girls go nuts for the stuff, and it has a good name.

Worked for a bunch of liquor stores while I was in uni, and I was usually "the wine guy". When I wasn't, I'd pick the brain of the guy who knew more, haha.

I was the same, mostly drank reds, trying to get into the whites more as well. S.A. really is more suited to reds, though, with our climate/soils/techniques.

And yeah, definitely do it - make sure you stay at the wineries, too - many of them have awesome accommodation and restaurants. Do your research and work out which ones you want to stay at, and make sure you end your day there - it's well worth it.

Breaking news: Due to the recent spate of violence on Perth streets, the Federal government has issued a travel advisory warning, advising against all non-essential travel to Perth.
