It is tradition dating back many centuries when people who had enough money would give gifts or alms to the poor in their communities.
These days it just means the day off after Christmas when people get over hangovers, families eat left over turkey / chocolate, go shopping in the post-Christmas sales and some charities do special events in the spirit of the old tradition.
