does driving help a PG in their playmaking duties? For example, if the PG has respectable for every other stat, would a strong/respectable versus mediocre/inept driving ability affect their ability to set up shot? In real life, such ability should affect drive-and-kick plays - just wondering if the game simulates this sort of detail?

if you have more offense possibilities, they get guarded a bit weaker ;) So a driving PG slightly draws attention from the defense to make it easier to score for his team mates - but this effect is pretty small.

How do you know that this pretty small effect really exists?

I still struggle with the importance of driving...(in this game) .

On the rules, there is standing something like that:

Whether an outside shot goes in is a combination of the individual and team outside scoring rating, as well as the opposing individual and team outside defense. If a great player is the only option on a bad team, he will draw more coverage, and therefore his shooting percentage will go down; similarly a bad player on the same team will only tend to shoot outside shots when he is wide open. The same applies to other shot types.

And driving isn't useless for the offence, usually good drivers score more points then "similiar" player with compareable offensiv abilitys.

By player order I hope you mean this:
Driving being most important to less important 1.SG
2.SF
3.PG
4.PF
5.C
Ps: If I was you I wouldnt train Driving for PF/C positions since you need to be almost at the three point line to "Drive" for a bucket , train IS for PF/C.

driving isn't real driving, driving means the ability to create his own shots this could be a three pointer to ;)
