Lately, I have been looking for a new trainer to lower cost. I keep losing the bids to other managers.

The way I see this is that the break even point should be based on the replacement cost (bid price + severance pay) and salary savings after x many weeks (taking into account the 2% weekly salary increase). One could argue that the other sources of income should also be taken into consideration but I disagree. In the end when a team has negative cash flow every week, it is a matter of time before they go bankrupt. But the fact is that somehow other managers are able to pay amount of money that will turn them negative and never recover the money they paid for the trainer.

What am I not considering that others may be?

You're doing it right. I try to figure out the maximum amount worth bidding and that's it.

Trainers especially go for high bid prices, whereas you can almost always get the other staff cheaply.

Maybe go for one level lower trainer and, if necessary, bid a bit more to balance the difference in salary?

Well my trainer was costing me 36k a week. So I went out and I bought one of the same level for 336k (includes severance) and his salary was about 15-16k. I figure a 20k difference in savings, so in about 15 odd weeks I get it back right? My plan was to keep the trainer for ~2 seasons which is closer to ~23 weeks so I guess it's worth it?

How much do you think is reasonable I guess is my question. I was willing to spend up to 500k which is about 3 weeks worth of savings, and I don't think 500k is too much seeing as I've seen them go for more.

The trainer level I'm talking about is Superior (5).

Also you have to account for the trainer level, since you'll get more pops out of your players if you have a higher trainer.

Yes, but then on the other hand, if I had not bought my new trainer, he would have also kept increasing in salary at 2% as well. Really, if you want to find a good trainer, you will have to shell out $$. The reason is because they are an integral part of generating future revenues (assuming you train correctly) since those players will either increase in selling value, win you games, or bring in merch income from U21/NT

I end up firing my current PR guy.. I got a lower rated PR guy since in the lower divisions, I don't need one that good. The plan is to then wait until the right salary levels vs. purchase price to get a new trainer.

If your cost-benefit analysis works for you, that's great.

I have not used better than Advanced trainers, and I have never bid more than $30K to win one. Generally I'm getting a guy with salary between 11,500 and 12,500. I keep them until they get to around 16,500. At that point, saving another 4-5K per week ends up being worth spending about 40K in bidding and severance. After about 8 weeks, it's savings for another season or so.

Unless I were trying train at the NT level, I can't imagine it would be worth the extra investment on a trainer for me. I'm not even sure I can justify my costs of scouting and training as it is. Sometimes I think it's a losing game entirely. I can easily spend 300K on scouting alone and not be able to recoup that from selling the draftee, and calculating the eventual Merch benefit from keeping my guy is beyond my ability at this point.

I guess that is the difference. I am currently training U21/NT worthy players so it should pay off for me. I also don't do scouting since I am not going to be in the bottom 4 of my league and won't have good picks. I generally just save a pool of scouting points for those times when I do need to scout. Other than that, I don't scout. Allows me an extra 20k per week

As written before me, You are not missing anything and considerations are accurate. Once given a trainer salary and a candidate salary you can easily (well, maybe not that easily but definitely do-able) calculate how much money one should spend on this candidate.the problem is that not all the players in the game are doing those calculations and so they propose some over bids on staff members. you just need to be patient and wait for your opportunity to come. i use staff members from levels 2-4 and can surley say that there are good opportunities in those levels.
