Well, the Fishbowl has survived another season and despite wild rumours that it would sink to the bottom of the ocean, it remains strong with two competitions, the East and the west. In the West there are the ABBLers and in the East…well, er…the leftovers that nobody wanted.
This season’s East competitors:Home Axis
Baxter Bogans
JW City Bulls (Last season’s Champs)
Shepparton shooters
Geelong Vipers
The Mighty Oaks (last season’s Runner-Ups)
TeamAkuma
Gisborne Gladiators
The East has kicked off its new season and it has already become clear that it can be broken up into three categories. In the top category, (1st tier: competitive teams with reasonable rosters) there are Home axis, Baxter Bogans and The Mighty Oaks. In the second category (2nd tier: semi-competitive teams) there is…the Shepparton shooters. And finally, there is the 3rd and final tier (limited/no rosters) which is comprised of the Geelong Vipers, TeamAkuma and the Gisborne Gladiators, two teams that have proven themselves in the past but are choosing to merely participate this season.
ROUND 1Game 1: Baxter Bogans def Home axis 73-61
(65260962)The Bogans were out of the Pub and into this one early, holding a handy 8 point lead at the first break. Home Axis rallied in the 2nd and 3rd quarters and the game was all tied up going into the 4th. With Newman, Rylance and Freideris doing the bulk of the scoring, the Bogans managed to outscore Home Axis 31-19 to win by 12.
3 votes: C. Newman (SF) 22pts, 8rb, 3stl 9.5 rating
2 votes: C. Rylance (SG) 20pts, 6rb, 3stls, 3assts 12.0 rating
1 vote: K. Mohamad (SF) 29pts 12.5 rating
GAME 2: JW City Bulls def Shepparton shooters 100-69
(65260963) The Bulls fielded way too much firepower in this one and the game was over at half time with the Bulls holding a 24 point lead that was only ever going to increase. Although the shooters 3-2 zone may have helped to minimise the Bulls’ Run and Gun, the shooters had to wait until the bUlls bench came on in the 4th before they were able to start sinking some shots and managed to outscore the Bulls 21-19 in that quarter. A comprehensive 31 point win to the Bulls in the end.
3 votes: S. McArthur (PG) 24pts, 6reb, 6asts 16.0 rating
2 votes: J. Corica (SG) 17pts, 8 asts 15.5 rating
1 vote: Y. Benayoun (SF) 30pts, 4reb, 4asts 9.0 rating
While Benayoun scored more, 8 of the 30 came against the bench while Corica and McArthur defended better.
GAME 3: The Mighty Oaks def Geelong Vipers 103-49
(65260964)Holding a 36 point lead at the final break tells the story in this one. Although the Vipers’ two bigs, Escoron and Brkljac were very strong, each piling on close to 20pt-20reb games, the Oaks had too many offensive options and rolled the Vipers to win by 54.
3 votes: C. Stanik (C) 20pts, 18reb, 5asts 13.5 rating
2 votes: T. Diez de Escoron (PF) 18pts, 19rb (10 OR), 5asts 12.0 rating
1 vote: K. Gilewski (SG) 19pts, 4 asts 12.5 rating
S. Brkljac was very unlucky to get any votes and Gilewski got the votes over him on account of his output in relation to minutes.
GAME 4: TeamAkuma def Gisborne Gladiators 90-51
(65260965)TeamAkuma’s highest paid player in this one was an $8k SF trainee while Bainsy managed to field a lousy 3 players! Need I say more?
3 votes: P. Garofalo (SF) 33pts, 9reb, 4asts 9.0 rating
2 votes: A. Jain (C) 10pts, 11reb 6.5 rating
1 vote: K. Hampartumian (PG) 14pts 5.5 rating
To be continued...
