Opening Night Tonight

Tonight kicks off the first venture for the Harrisburg Hammerheads into D2 territory vs. Scrap Heap Low Posters. Its been a long road to get here. 13 seasons were spent in D3 with four of those trips going to the league III.7 finals which ultimately ended in bitter disappointment.

Finally, the fifth trip got it done for the Hammerheads. And even that series was no walk in the park with Hunterkirualeorio taking the Hammerheads all the way down the the 4th qtr of game three with the championship hanging in the balance.

Ray Muncy, now in his 17th season with the Hammerheads, was all smiles. "I wasn't sure it (getting to D2) was ever going to happen for me in my career. We've had some very good teams along the way whom which came up short. My role has changed a lot over the years...playing less minutes and all...but I can say I'm happier now than I've ever been in my career."

D2 looks like a whole different ball game. Salaries are outrageous for one...Mapleton Mashers just stocked up on the $315,314/wk salary of monster big man Jonathan Beaucage. Many other squads field starting lineups all above the $50K range. So the Hammerheads work will be cut out for them. It will be interesting to see how five time consecutive MVP Klaus Birresborn fares at this level of competition. After averaging a career high 37.8ppg last season, there is no question the defensive pressure will be turned up a couple of notches so it is expected that kind of production will fall.
