I'd like to play just 5 guys in my next scrimmage to make sure a player gets 48 minutes at an off position. It means we'll get routed, but it doesn't matter.

It doesn't look like he has anyone he's training, but should I send a note letting him know? Are there any unwritten rules on how to approach stuff like this?

As long as the game doesn't end up as a forfeit, typically no one cares who you play or for how long. Sending a quick message of your plans doesn't hurt if you wanted to take the time to do so, but it isn't necessary.

no one really cares, just do not forfeit the game, as stated above

I myself communicate with someone I know/semi-know/etc.

And set up that once we're both out of the cup we scrimmage each other for the entire duration of season, so its the same scrimmage partner every week.

I do this because I am not "flag chasing", and by doing it this way we both know who's training what and where, and that its the same lineup of guys day in and day out, and that there won't be a forfeit.

By the nature of you asking this question, you are easily in the running to be the most polite player in this entire game.
