How helpful are the player ratings after a game? Are they a pretty accurate indication of how well they played?

From what I've seen, player rating aren't a very good way to dictate a players performance. It seems like the more consistent a player is on the court, the higher the expectations are for that specific player. You may have seen one have an average game and have a higher player rating then another player who had a 29 points outburst; shooting over 50% from the field. Chances are that player who had that average game usually underperforms most of the time and just had a better game then he usually has while the player who had the offensive outburst usually scores or shoots around that % often. This is just a theory.

Your boxscore is the best way to go when your looking for game performance 99.99999999999999% of the time (excluding ratings....most of the time) ;)

You need to know what influences the player's rating, but it can be helpful. If you have a great player in terms of skills and gameshape but he gets a low rating, you could conclude "hey maybe his stamina is not high enough for the 45 minutes he played". Then you can train stamina to make the player perform better in more minutes, or get a better backup so he doesn't need to play that many minutes. Other factors can be gameshape, or position played. Maybe you have a PF or SG that you want to play at SF, then if his player rating is 3 points lower at SF than at his natural position it might not be a wise choice to play him at SF.

There is always something to learn in this game ;)

But rating doesn't say much about how the player performed box-score wise. A player can have a high rating but bad stats or vice versa.
