Despite the lack of interest to my recent post I have decided to go ahead with the MVP votes anyway. In this thread I will record the MVP votes for the night (Saturday or Tuesday game) and will open another thread solely for maintaing a tally of votes. I would ask that if anyone wants to comment on either the tally or the wekly votes awarded that they do so in the Season "18 thread".

PART A (Week 7)

Game 1: CROCKERS v CARLTON SUNS 114-96 (39664595)

Both teams played outside offenses in this game with the CROCKERS hitting from downtown at almost 57% (13/23). The Suns choice to play a FCP had no effect on the CROCKERS at all who committed a mere 9 turnovers. This game was won in the opening quarter, the CROCKERS holding a 13 point lead going into the second. They maintained and even built on this lead slightly to register an 18 point win despite the Suns putting more effort into the game.

3 votes: A. Calugas (C) 44 pts and 9 assists 13.0 rating
2 votes: M. Javadov (C) 24 pts, 5 reb, 5 asts 13.0 rating
1 vote: G. Patel (CS) 29 pts 9.0 rating

Game 2: HawthornFC v Maltese Falcons 134-108 (39664598)

Both teams put the same amount of effort into this game which saw HawthornFC look inside while the Falcons tried to exploit the matchups. Defensively, HawthornFC’s decision to play FCP was the game winning move here forcing the Falcons to turn the ball over 22 times! HawthornFC edged away at each quarter to record a comfortable 26 point win.

3 votes: C. Hughes (HF) 21 pts, 4 reb, 4 asts in 24 minutes as a SF 10.0 rating
2 votes: J. Fitado (HF) 19 pts, 9 reb, 6 asts in 27 minutes 12.5 rating
1 vote: O. Raines (MF) 27 pts, 12 reb 10.0 rating

Although Raines scored more than Hughes and Fitado, he raked up his points in 39 minutes.

Game 3: The Legends678 v Edgeworth Sixers 118-48 (39664597)

Both teams put in the same effort but it was the Legends who dominated this one. When the matchups at every position, the Legends had too much firepower, winning every quarter and registering a massive 60 point win.

3 votes: D. Noutsos (TL) 34 pts, 14 reb 10.5 rating
2 votes: M. Burigana (TL) 23 pts, 13 reb 10.5 rating (his 6 TOs balanced with 5 Blks)
1 vote: R. Varditis (TL) 18 pts, 4 asts 8.5 rating

Game 4: Mash Brewers v Cheltenham Bombs 119-97 (39664596)

The Brewers decision to put more effort into this game made all the difference in this one. The Cheltenham Bombs, lead by their big men, Morrell and Zacaroli, couldn’t stop the Brewers. Their choice to play a 2-3 defense working against them in this one as the Brewers opted for a PTB offense. The Brewers, however, going with the 2-3 zone also, were able to minimise the Bombs two big men enough to secure the victory. Winning three of the four quarters, the Brewers notched up a comfortable 22 point victory.

3 votes: J. Morrell (CB) 29 pts, 14 reb 4 asts 10.5 rating
2 votes: G. Lupoli (MB) 29 pts, 6 reb 8.5 rating
1 vote: V. Heslehurst (MB) 24 pts, 10 reb 9.5 rating

PART B

Game 5: GC Vikings v Domination 133-36 (39664600)

This game was one of complete domination, but it was not Domination doing the dominating! The Vikings, with minimal effort swept aside the hapless Domination in what can only be described as a bloodbath. Showing no mercy in this game of matchups where there were no matchups, only pain for Domination, the Vikings’ were relentless. Unable to score double digits in any of the first three quarters, Domination revelled briefly in the final quarter against the Vikings’ bench. When the dust had settled, the score-line said it all: a 97 point massacre of Domination!

3 votes: A. Nicholas (GCV) 31 pts, 26 reb, 6 stls 12.5 rating
2 votes: J. Plasier (GCV) 19 pts, 11 asts 12.0 rating
1 vote: W. Seeley (GCV) 17 pts, 20 reb 10.5 rating

Game 6: Moorditj Magick v Statesmans 105-101 (39664599)

Desperate for the win at home, the Statesmans CT’d this one against the Magick’s TIE and they almost stole the win with the game going down to the wire. The Magick, with most of its players out of position, looked inside for its big men to do the damage while the Statesmans relied on the matchups. Nursing a 3 point lead going into the final quarter, the Magick’s big men come to the rescue, helping them across the line to score a 4 point win.

3 votes: N. Khedri (MM) 27 pts, 11 reb, 6 asts 11.5 rating
2 votes: H. Bracken (S) 26 pts, 15 reb, 4 stls as SF 9.5 rating (5 TO’s)
1 vote: W. Hares (S) 32 pts, 6 asts (3 TO’s) 9.0 rating

Game 7: Glenvale Cheaters v Doons Dazzlers 103-57 (39664601)

The Cheaters did all the dazzling in this one exploiting the matchups across all positions. Winning every quarter comfortably, they recorded a very healthy 46 point victory.

3 votes: M. Balbiano (GC) 14 pts, 16 reb as a SF 11.5 rating
2 votes: F. Coupeau (GC) 12 pts, 7 reb, 9 asts 12.0 rating
1 vote: A. Tienforti (GC) 19 pts, 6 reb 7.5 rating

Game 8: Top-Prides v XBB 96-36 [match= 39664594]

Well, the last game of the night was yet another one-sided affair with the tanking XBB being blown off the court by the Top-Prides. With no defense against the Top-Prides outside shooting, the Prides handed the sleeping giants another significant loss. The 60 point win a handy percentage boost for the Top-Prides.

3 votes: J. Horan (TP) 16 pts, 4 asts, 4 stls in 28 minutes 9.5 rating
2 votes: D. Bala (TP) 27 pts, 4 reb, 7 asts 7.5 rating
1 vote: R. Gut (TP) 12 pts, 13 reb 10.0 rating

I gave Horan the 3 votes over Bala after examining the matchups. Horan had a tougher matchup and notched up his
stats in less time while finishing with a higher rating accordingly.

Week 8 (Saturday 31/12/11)

PART A

GAME 1: Top-Prides v HawthornFC 129-119 (39664602)

Knowing a loss would push them out of the top four and finals race, the Top Prides put more effort into this one. While the HawthornFC looked inside to score, the Prides’ big men did enough to limit their scoring, allowing the likes of Cabuenas and Bravo to hit from outside the arc on their way to a strong 10 point win.

3 votes: E. Battaglino (HFC) 29 pts, 10 reb, 4 stls 12.5 rating
2 votes: X. Cabuenas (TP) 31 pts, 10 reb, 4 asts 12.5 rating
1 vote: L. Magie (HFC) 26 pts, 13 reb, 4 asts 10.0 rating

GAME 2: GC Vikings v Cheltenham Bombs 102-75 (39664607)

First versus second on the ladder was a good game to watch as both teams put the same amount of effort into the game. The Bombs looked to Zacaroli and Morrell to score big and they did while the Vikings decided to play Patient offense and let Plasier loose. Opening up a 14 point lead early, the Vikings never really looked in trouble as they secured a 27 point win.

3 votes: J. Plasier (GCV) 48 pts 15.5 rating
2 votes: J. Morrell (CB) 23 pts, 10 reb, 4 asts 10.5 rating
1 vote: C. Zacaroli (CB) 26 pts, 11 reb, 4 asts (6 TOs!) 10.0 rating

GAME 3: Mash Brewers v KyV 107-58 (39664604)

In their first game in Div III.3, the KyV tried to match the Brewers who looked inside to score and came up short. The Brewers won every quarter easily, handing the KyV a 49 point loss in their inaugural game.

3 votes: R. Payne (MB) 22 pts, 8 reb 9.5 rating
2 votes: S. McGuire (MB) 18 pts, 11 reb 12.0 rating
1 vote: A. Musah (MB) 17 pts, 13 reb 12.5 rating

NOTE: Technically, McGuire and Musah were each 2 minutes short of the minimum 26 minutes required to be eligible for MVP votes; however, given that this one was a blowout, I gave them votes:

GAME 4: Maltese Falcons v XBB 100-83 (39664609)

The Falcons will be more than happy to take the win against the tanking XBB. The Falcons exploited XBB’s line-up by playing PTB despite XBB trying to slow the pace with a Patient offense. The Falcons easily won the first three quarters before XBB managed to gets some points on the board against the Falcon’s bench.

3 votes: P. Kouveliotis (XBB) 57 pts, 19 reb 12.0 rating
2 votes: D. Zrnic (MF) 28 pts, 5 reb, 7 asts 9.5 rating
1 vote: O. Raines (MF) 19 pts, 12 reb 10.0 rating

PART B

GAME 5: CROCKERS v statesmans 116-69 (39664603)

With both teams playing matchups’ tactics, this was a no-contest with the CROCKERS’ back court too strong for the statesmans. The CROCKERS won every quarter romping it home with a 47 point win.

3 votes: A. Calugas (C) 27 pts, 12 asts, 4 stls 12.5 rating
2 votes: M. Javadov (C) 20 pts, 5 reb, 4 asts 11.5 rating
1 vote: R. McPhail (C) 17 pts, 4 reb 13.5 rating

Could have switched Javadov and McPhail around for votes but weighed up overall performance and felt that Javadov, as SF, was slightly better value.

GAME 6: Glenvale Cheaters v Legends678 105-85 (39664605)

Both teams opted to go with the default BO/M2M tactics. Both teams also put in the same amount of effort into the game. However, the Cheaters found it easier to score inside and out. While nothing separated the two teams in the second half, the 20 point lead the Cheaters held at half time was enough to win by that margin.

3 votes: C. Orozco (GC) 29 pts, 15 reb 13.0 rating
2 votes: E. De Decker (GC) 19 pts, 4 asts 9.5 rating
1 vote: R. Varditis (TL) 27 pts, 9 reb 8.0 rating

GAME 7: Moorditj Magick v CARLTON SUNS 100-85 (39664606)

A glance at the scoreline would suggest this was a close game, however, the SUNS, desperate to stay in the finals’ race CT’d this game to the Magick’s TIE…and almost stole the victory on Magick soil. The classic inside versus outside game didn’t really eventuate with the Magick big men shutting down the dangerous Pomper while the Magick guards shut down Patel, the League’s 2nd Leading Scorer, who scored 9 of his 16 points in the last quarter when the game was already over. The Magick cruising to a 15 point win.

3 votes: L. Bolonski (MM) 26 pts, 10 reb, 4 asts 12.5 rating
2 votes: W. Roman (CS) 32 pts, 5 reb 9.5 rating (6 of 11 from downtown)
1 vote: M. Rodriguez (MM) 26 pts, 4 reb, 7 asts 10.5 rating

GAME 8: Doons Dazzlers v Edgeworth Sixers 122-83 (39664608)

Desperate to notch up their second win for the season, the Sixers thought they had the players to match the Dazzlers. Unfortunately, Doons Dazzlers razzled and dazzled in this one and easily accounting for the Sixers with a 39 point win. Both teams put the same amount of effort into this one.

3 votes: B. Gillis (DD) 22 pts, 24 reb, 11 asts (AWESOME TRIPLE-DOUBLE!) 6.0 rating
2 votes: E. Romoli (DD) 18 pts, 10 reb, 9 asts (almost a triple-double) 8.0 rating
1 vote: Z. Pejakovic (ES) 26 pts, 11 reb 4.5 rating

WEEK 9 (Saturday 7th Jan, 2012)

PART A

GAME 1: HawthornFC v Mash Brewers 111-98 (39664620)

Both teams put the same amount of effort into the game. Both teams looked inside offensively but each chose a different defense. The Hawks went for a FCP while the Brewers went for and InsideBox and One defense. There was a mere two points separating them at quarter time but the second and third quarters saw the Hawks add another fifteen. Both teams were locked in the forth with the Hawks taking this one by 13 points. Once again a team used FCP and once again it tipped the balance, causing the Brewers to turn the ball over 10 more times than the Hawks.

3 votes: A. Musah (MB) 34 pts, 14 reb 11.0 rating
2 votes: L. Magie (HFC) 23 pts, 11 reb (7 off) 9.5 rating
1 vote: S. McGuire (MB) 19 pts, 15 reb (9 off) 12.5 rating

This was a hard one to pick votes but the FG% of the three players was the key here. Could have easily given any of the 3 the 3 votes really. Also, a special mention to C. Hughes (HFC), an SF that was unlucky to get votes.

GAME 2: GC Vikings v Maltese Falcons 122-91 (39664625)

Well, the Falcons put more effort into this game just as they did for the past few games which has really not helped their cause. The Vikings’ Run and Gun was too much despite the Falcons holding level in the 2nd. Plasier and Luzas were in fine form. A comfortable win for the GC Vikings with the margin 31 points in the end.

3 votes: A. Luzas (GCV) 22 pts (62 FG% and 50 3FG%) in 28 mins 12.0 rating
2 votes: J. Plasier (GCV) 34 pts, (42 FG% and 46 3FG%) 6 reb, 7 asts (6/13 3PT) in 48 mins 12.0 rating
1 vote: F. Jack (MF) 20 pts, 22 reb 10.0 rating

Gave Luzas the 3 over Plasier because of the value each had given their time on court and shooting percentages.

GAME 3: Top-Prides v KyV 106-75 (39664618)

Both teams looked to player matchups to win this one with the new kids on the block, KyV putting more effort into the game. Unfortunately for KyV it was one-way traffic from start to finish with the Prides ravishing them for a 31 point win.

3 votes: R. Gut (TP) 22 pts, 12 reb, 5 asts 11.0 rating
2 votes: C. Stojkovic (TP) 12 pts, 10 reb, 4 stls, 3 blks 9.0 rating in 32 mins
1 vote: D. Bala (TP) 18 pts, 5 asts 6.5 rating in 48 mins

GAME 4: Cheltenham Bombs v XBB 94-55 (39664623)

Given the XBB’s tanking ways, this was always going to be a win for the Bombs. The question was: by how much? The Bombs played to their strength going inside, allowing Morrell and Zacaroli to once again show their form while XBB continued to use a Patient offense to slow them down and allow Kouveliotis to score big yet again. With no-one to stop the Bombs from scoring they lead every change to run out 39 point winners.

3 votes: C. Zacaroli (CB) 14 pts, 12 reb, 5 asts in 30 mins 10.5 rating
2 votes: J. Morrell (CB) 16 pts, 6 reb, 3 asts, 3 blks in 30 mins 10.5 rating
1 vote: P. Kouveliotis (X) 36 pts, 13 reb (12/44 FG and 4/13 3FG) in 43 mins 10.0 rating

PART B

GAME 5: statesmans v The Legends678 94-88 (39664621)

Although the statesmans put more effort into this game, there was nothing separating them at 3 quarter time. In fact they were level after the first, one point separating them at the 2nd and one point separating them at the final change. It seems that that extra enthusiasm allowed the statesmans to pull away when it mattered to score a 6 point win. A good, close game.

3 votes: R. Viladrau (S) 25 pts, 19 reb (7 off) 9.5 rating
2 votes: B. Elliott (TL) 24 pts, 5 reb, 7 asts 11.0 rating
1 vote: H. Bracken (S) 18 pts, 7 reb, 5 asts 7.5 rating

The statesmans’ 2-3 tactics helped Viladrau get the 3 votes over Elliott. Bracken only just got the single vote over Varditis.

GAME 6: CROCKERS v Glenvale Cheaters 95-79 (39664619)

Glenvale showed why they’re in the hunt come finals time, going toe-to-toe with the CROCKERS in the first quarter and actually taking a 3 point lead into the second. However, the CROCKERS’ big guns in McPhail and Javadov started to fire and quickly reeled in the Cheaters who were not even going to cheat their way to victory this time. The CROCKERS continued to pull away with a strong 16 point win with both teams putting in the same effort levels. OF course, while the Cheaters seemed to hold their own in this one…kind of…the CROCKERS $1.2 mil purchase of a monster Centre will no doubt send the likes of the Vikings a clear message: They’re here and they’re serious about going back to Div II!

3 votes: R. McPhail (C) 26 pts, 4 reb, 4 asts 12.5 rating
2 votes: C. Orozco (GC) 23 pts, 20 reb 11.0 rating
1 vote: M. Javadov (C) 18 pts, 8 reb 12.0 rating

GAME 7: Moorditj Magick v greenbank raiders 136-50 (39664624)

With the Magick’s new recruits starting to find some form and rookie sensation Johnny Dogan beginning to find his range, the Magick reminded the raiders that they were in Div III in a game that can only be described as a massacre. Despite putting more effort into this one, the raiders were dealt an 86 point hiding.

3 votes: J. Ardura (MM) 23 pts, 13 reb (5 off as SF) 4 asts 10.0 rating
2 votes: N. Khedri (MM) 19 pts, 9 reb, 3 stls in 29 mins 14.0 rating
1 vote: J. Dogan (MM) 25 pts in 33 mins 9.5 rating before being injured!

GAME 8: Doons Dazzlers v CARLTON SUNS 124-123 (39664622)

This was the game of the round. Both teams put in the same effort and both teams looked outside to score. The SUNS opened up with a massive 40 point 1st quarter, followed by 30 and 29 in the 2nd and 3rd yet the Dazzlers held in there, unwilling to let the SUNS claim this victory on home soil. At the final break the CARLTON SUNS had a 14 point lead and had their hands firmly on the away win. Enter the Dazzler’s home crowd whose deafening cheers carried their team forward. The three-pronged attack of Tucinas, Antal and Digger were instrumental in the final quarter combining for 27 points in a quarter that saw the Dazzlers pile on 39 points. It seemed fitting that having scored 12, 4th quarter points, that Tucinas’s final basket gave the Dazzlers a one-point lead which they held on to, recording a memorable come-from-behind win against a stronger opponent.

3 votes: R. Tucinas (DD) 30 pts (12 in the 4th quarter) 11.0 rating
2 votes: S. Giz (CS) 28 pts, 4 reb, 6 asts 9.5 rating
1 vote: G. Patel (CS) 36 pts, 5 asts 8.0 rating
